the beetle's trunk

hello to everybody.
I would like to appologize in advance for being such a rookie...
I just bought me a 1983 beetle (a beuty), for the last 3 days ive benn opening my trunk by pressing the button on it, and just flipping in it.
Somebody told me im doing it wrong, and there should be a button or something inside the car that supposed to do that, and that im ruining the trunk's lock when im opening it the way i did.
This somebody, however, had no idea wwhere that button is located..
Is he right? where's the button located?
