Question cupholder stuck in

Hi,
I don't usually drink in any of my cars, but I discovered the cupholder on the console is stuck in. I can't ignore little problems such as this. In other Auroras I've released and stored the cupholder so I know how it is supposed to work. I pressed all kinds of ways but the thing never pops out.

Do I need to get inside the console to free this up?
If so, how do I get into the console?

I don't have the factory service manual (yet).

Thanks

Re: cupholder stuck in

I've had a number of these that were caused by debris (a penny, rock, toy, etc...) that found its way into the latch mechanism. Unless you are very lucky, the assembly must come out to remove the offending object.

How is the assembly taken out? Screws - where?

Got it out with gentle persuasion. Yes, there was debris in there.

Re: cupholder stuck in

If you look in your ash tray at the top, there's two screws there. In your center console, there's two screws way at the bottom and i think there's two at the top also. Then you also have to take your shifter off. There's a fastener that looks like a staple in the front. Pull that out with needle nose pliers. Now the whole center part around the shifter and the cup holder will pull right off.

Re: cupholder stuck in

What could be wrong though is that there isn't something jamming it up, but there's a latch in there that when you push on the cup holder, the latch moves out of the way and when you close it, the latch moves back. That might not be working. You can get a new one at the dealer for a few dollars.
