Really... I figured they added the methanol to up the octane or something.

Re: Methanol injection ?

IMO methanol burns with airfuel mixture, it takes up space just like water. But one thing is methanol burns hotter than regular airfuel mixture too, even it acts as a octane booster agents. Beside adding water(aquamist) can also let u run more boost or more advance timing. Another advantage is water are everywhere.

It is a great production don't get me wrong, but most people do use water because they are almost free, and it is just as effective as methanol. (reduce detonation, clean spark plugs, more boost)

Let me dig out some of the articles that I read in the past. Maybe that will give everyone a better clue and knowledge.

Re: Methanol injection ?

okay I found this.
Aquamist from UK, and very popular and successful water injection company.

Re: Re: Methanol injection ?

I know you probably don't need to know all of this, but I'm bored and feel like typing anyways....

Both are effective ways of reducing the chance of detonation and allowing you to safely raise the boost.

Methanol does have some advantages over water still though. Methanol can carry a little more than 3 times the amount of heat out of the combustion chamber than regular gasoline can because of methanol's high heat of vaporization. Methanol - 396 BTU/lb, Regular pump gas - 117 BTU/lb. Basically what all this means is that the engine will run about 3 times cooler with methanol than it used to with gasoline, therefor allowing you to run higher boost pressures.

Methanol has a density of 22,725 kj/kg. Gasoline has a density of 47,895 kj/kg. If you multiply the density's by the stochiometric ratio then you will find that methanol can really only produce about 11% more energy than regular pump gas. See work below:

Methanol:
2(CH3OH) + 3(O2) => 4(H2O) + 2(CO2)
A ratio of 3/2 = 1.5 Oxygen molecules per fuel molecule
- Stochiometric ratio (Molecular weight divided by previous ratio) for methanol: 32/1.5=21
- Amount of energy that can be produced w/ one kg of oxygen: 22,725 * 21 = 477,225

Gasoline:
2(C8H18)+25(O2) => 18(H20) + 16(CO2)
A ratio of 25/2 = 12.5 Oxygen molecules per fuel molecule
- Stochiometric ratio for gasoline: 114/12.5=9
- Amount of energy that can be produced w/ one kg of oxygen: 47,895 * 9 = 431,055

Now you can see that methanol can only produce 11% more energy than gasoline..... not that impressive.

If you wanted some serious extra power, then look at Nitromethane. I won't go through all the formula's again for Nitromethane, but I'll tell you that it will produce 130% more energy than gasoline per kg of oxygen...
