need opinion on 95 eclipse gs-t
Hi, I am thinking of buying a 1995 eclipse gs-t. The car has a new motor with 40k miles on it and a new tranny with 15k miles on it. It also has a greddy type-s bov, mbc, upgraded turbo, new springs lowered 1.8", injen intake, custom exhaust, turbo timer, new tires, 17" konigs, fuel pump, air filter, and motor mounts. The car looks real nice and he seems to have taken good care of it. He ran the car regularly at 14 lbs boost. The person who had the car before him installed the new motor and the actual miles on the body is like 115k. I was wondering what you guys think of this car cuz i dont really know too much about buying cars since this is gonna be my first car. I dont want to get this car and have it break down on me all the time. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

find out why the engine and tranny have been replaced, get the vin number so you could look on www.carfax.com to see if you can find anything there, also see if the guy has proof that the engine is new and only has 40k miles on it, same with the tranny... good luck

Dont even bother asking that question, there is no right answer.
It will vary with every car and every driver. Like I have said in the past, I have friends running 12s with 180k miles on stock original motors. While poeple like me may be on thier 5th motor at 170k miles It depends on how you maintain the car, how hard you race/drive it, and how lucky you are. I have bad luck.

new motor and tranny would raise eyebrows for me. I have a 96 gst all stock and don't run it extremely hard, but do take it to the redline a little more than occasionally. It has 115k and still runs as good as when I got it at 75k miles. Unless mine is just exceptionally good or that one was just a lemon off the line, I'd say it may have been abused.

Re: need opinion on 95 eclipse gs-t
alright thanks. Should I expect to have problems with the car in the near future or will i start having problems when it gets closer to 200k miles. I really dont want to have to fix a lot of things because it is my first car.

I already said above. No way anyone can possbily know that. Anytime you buy a used car, you are taking a chance. Some poeple have good luck with thier DSMs, other dont.
I'll tell you right now though I will replace my whole drivetrain 50 more times before I switch cars. AWD turbo is where its at for me, And DSM is the cheap, effective way to do it. I'll do what I ave to do to keep things going. The HP ollar ratio on these cars is huge, if you're willing to take the good with the bad. If youre the type to pussy out when the alternator belt starts to squeal when its cold out, you may want to consider a honda/toyota. High HP/high traction cars have issues. A FWD shouldnt be nearly as bad as an AWD in this regard. You can either take the chance, or not. The choice is yours Good luck.

Re: need opinion on 95 eclipse gs-t
mostly depends on the car and its previous owner, i kno peeps that still run clean with 120 miles on it, and others which have minor - major problems with 110!

It is for sure that a modified engine will tend to last a shorter amount of time than a stock one. It could be partly because people with modified engines drive them harder than a granny would, but take that into consideration when you look for a car. If you want a slightly quick but ultra reliable, a modified GST may not be what you want.
