There are different qualities of gas, which is best? I don't know. I only use Amoco 93

yea its called octane and thats the number you are talking about..... i think shell is the best but i think some body has gas thats octane level is close to 100... the higher the number the better the engine will run.. jus try the next step up from economy to premium or plus

Re: does what kind of gas matter?

a stock civic in good repair should do ok with 87... high compression/turbo/superchargers more timing advance, etc can cause you to need higher test though like 89 or 93... there is a gas station near me that sells 94.5 octane gas that a lot of the hot cars run (like old mopars, etc.)

Re: does what kind of gas matter?

I believe in quality of gasoline. I know my car gets better mpg when I get 92 octane at Mobil than when I get 92 octane at Sheetz. I've gone 3 weeks with Sheetz gas and get an average of 25mpg. With Mobil or Sunoco I get 30-33mpg.

Re: does what kind of gas matter?

ive used 87 before (lowest i think in CA), then i tried 91 (highest i think in CA)...and compared the two. i had better gas mileage on 91 octane. the difference in price on both may be a bit but the better gas mileage from the 91 will compensate for its price when compared to 87. also, i noticed the engine runs smoother on 91 octane. i also heard that your engine will last longer when you use higher octane rating compared to low octane rating. dont know about the last one i mentioned. just correct me if i am wrong. but i am sure that better gas mileage is true.

There is a difference between company A's premium & company B's premium. The octane level should be a given.

I only use gas from Sheetz. They have a warranty against engine damage from water and shit being in the gas. I pass one almost every day during my travels too. I'm trying to figure out how much the octane rating effects me too. I've only got bolt-ons, and the car calls for 87. When I used the high-test, the only thing I really noticed was the smell of eggs. I asked around and one of the techs at the local Honda dealer told me it was because the cat isn't designed for it. That egg smell is actually some shit in the gas that gets past the cat. Was he full of shit? Not sure, but I did notice the smell. It wasn't constant either. I don't know how I got it started, but was glad to have it leave. I don't think I helped too much here, just trying to share my experiences. Good luck

Nobu

Re: does what kind of gas matter?

ok heres the thing on gas's .. yoru higher the octane .. teh more oxygen is in it therefor it combusts slower and you run sloother and are less likely to combust early. force induced engiens almost have to run high octane gas due to thier compression .. so the engine doesn't combust early adn have the explosion go up through teh valves.. no good can really come of that.

Re: does what kind of gas matter?

different companies have different additive packages in the gas too .. each gas company has a different one, I'm sure consumer reports has an article on the addative packages and which is the best for your car. other than that .. high octane is good to have .. but is expencive and you dont really need it to run smooth on stock civics. I would stick with 87 unless your planning on doing a head swap or pistons to raise the compression .. then I would run 93 octane for about month if your going pistons .. so it gets in the cars system ... you can do this if you want .. it truthfully doesnt require it .. but I'd do it anyway. ask away if you have any more questions

Do you have the "backspace" key on that keyboard?

Anyway, I heard you're better off using 87 rather than 93 on a civic...performancewise. There was just an article about this topic on msn a few weeks ago.

Re: does what kind of gas matter?

yes ... it runs better on 87 .. cause thats what the engine is made for. but .. if your going to up the compression or anything big and bad ass like that .. you have to use 93 so it doesnt hurt your car more than it'll help it.
