1998 Accord EX Hesitation Problem
I have a 1998 Honda Accord EX automatic with 92,000 miles on it. For the last month, since it got cold, when I start my car in the morning or after it has been parked for a few hours, when I try to accelerate the engine seems to hesitate and "bucks" after stepping on the gas when going from first to second. After the engine warms up the problem is gone. This happened when the weather was warm but the engine didn't "buck" as much and the hesitation went away much faster. One dealership told me to run a fuel injector cleaner and another told me that I would need to have my EGR port cleaned. I tried to the fuel injector cleaner and that didn't work and the EGR cleaning is supposed to cost me over 200 bucks. I don't have a check engine light yet but didn't know if there is something I need to do in order to avoid a problem in the future.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone may have. |

I have a very similar problem in my 2000 (5 spd, man trans, 45k mi). There is hesitation sometimes while I'm sorta cruising in a gear (usually 3rd 4th or 5th). It doesn't happen during hard acceleration, only when I'm gently accelerating or just giving enough gas to keep the car at speed. It doesn't seem to happen at highway speeds. Only between 30 and 60ish. Quick hesitation, then back to normal.
I ran a fuel system cleanout TWICE in the past 4 months. The first time seemed to have solved the problem for a while, but a month later it came back. The second time, it came back after about 3 weeks. In my case, it most likely has zero to do with weather because I live in Florida and it has actually happened less since Ive gone home to Chicago for Christmas. I was gonna check the spark plugs to see if one was misfiring, but why would it misfire so infrequently? Why wouldn't it have died completely by now?

Re: 1998 Accord EX Hesitation Problem
I was having the same problem with my 98 accord auto. I've read alot about the transmission problems in automatics for that Generation Accord so I decided to get out while the gettin was good. Hence the new 6spd.
I'm not saying that the transmission is going for sure but try and find out cuz' Honda wants an un-godly amount of money to replace them. Good luck and welcom to AF
