Please Help. Want to Buy Eclipse

ok, i have been looking to buy a 98 eclipse GS-T for a while now and i finally found 1 i think i might buy. But they said it has a new engine w/ only 1500 miles on it. It used to have 114,000. I'm just wonderin if you guys think i should still buy it. Should i wait and search for 1 w/ no engine changes? Will the fact that it used to have a lot of miles on it hurt the reliability? Like the turbo or transmission or anything like that? She siad the motor is stock, but so how did the miles come off. i know this is probobly a stupid question, sorry. Any help would be very appreceated. Thanx in advance.

Re: Please Help. Want to Buy Eclipse

I bought a 92 gsx and was told it had a new racing clutch, new tranny syncros, and a new head. Later I found most if not all of this was bs. For the last 6 months I have rebuilt this car one week at a time -always something. I am now putting a rebuilt engine in. Once that is done I hope I'm done for awhile. I bought a car significantly older and more milage than yours after being told it was all rebuilt- it has kept me busy ever since. These cars aren't supposed to be this unreliable. It sounds fishy to me and I don't see why a car as new as yours would need a rebuild if it was taken care of. I have found good cars out there so I would suggest keeping your eyes open until you find one that you're comfortable with. Are you saying someone messed with the odometer? That is fraud and it takes away a car's value immediately I don't understand.

Ask them if they have any paperwork for the new engine.

If it was me, i would not take the chance of buying that car, but thats just me.

You are still buying a car with 116k miles on the tranny and everything else. It might last a while still, but I don't think you'll save anything in the long run by buying a car that is closer to repairs. Find one with under 80k and then thank yourself that it has another 3 years of driving before it's in the condition this one is in.

Re: Please Help. Want to Buy Eclipse

Hey thanks a lot u guys. I think I might just wait for 1 w/ less miles. Thats what I wanted to do, but GS-Ts in my area (seattle,WA) just dont come around that often. Hey, any1 know any good ways to avoid problems when buying my car? Service documents/ oil change receipts/whatever. Mainly tryin to avoid the dreaded crankwalk.

Sounds like we both had the same storry nhockett and I'll be rebuilding my 4G63(1990 gsx) myself in the coming months.

It doesn't sound good to me, a car that new shouldn't need a new engine.
