Help with interior lighting

First off, just wanted to say hello, and that i've enjoyed the site/forums so far. and now my question,
just purchased myself a 97 Cav. Z24 (needed a decent 4banger for a commuter car, figured this would do, heh)
and i'm wanting to do a few things with the interior, like effect lighting, changing some fabric colors, maybe repaint some of the interior.

does anybody have any recommendations for products to redo the interior with or should i just wait 'till i have the spending cash to get it redone?(thinking about doing that later on anyways..)

as for the lighting, i allready have an idea for what i'm wanting to do, but i haven't found too many places online for tips on how to wire it up.
i'm wanting to mount switches on the middle console area, or maybe un the underside of the dash.
