Rx8 reliability?

Check out this, I found it on the Z forum I visit... pretty interesting. Guy's Rx8 ate a motor in 1200 miles.

I've heard nothing but bad things about the car ever since it came out. It's a shame too its a pretty cool looking car.

Re: Rx8 reliability?

well that could in theory be a factory lemon...i guess in the next few months we'll see how many show up with bad engines

but it is true...i belive they overhyped the engine and when it came out it was dynoing way low and that is just bad PR....losing customer trust is a very bad thing

Re: Rx8 reliability?

I think it's too early to say whether or not the car is reliable.
the rotary is a good idea and can be made to be a great engine, but it is expensive howver.

"Seals are bad inside the motor" any somehow coolant is on the floor? Huh? If coolant is leaking INSIDE the engine then it'll show up in the oil. Maybe he just didn't describe it right.

Anyway, Mazda beats Chevy in the respect that they volunteered to replace his engine. Chevy dealers ignore problems until the warranty expires, THEN they replace the engine on your tab

Jeez... Don't get on my case, I'm only repeating what the guy posted.

Each dealer is different, some are really great with customers and some are horrible. Just a fact of life.

Re: Rx8 reliability?

That's why you have to get to know your tech guys at your respective dealership. First, find one that has great customer service, and then get to know your guys there. Helps out tremendously.

The apex seals on those rotary engines are notorious for problems. The cars have an excellent power to weight ratio, but in terms of durability they suck. On to another comment left by a member:

I dunno about that (Or your comment about LS1 having valve problems), because where I am at I had a buddy that literally matted his car every chance he got. This guy drove like he was racing in the indy 500 to go to 7eleven. He also had every bolt on on the car as well. The dealership rebuilt his engine free of charge (Not to mention 2 different power steering pumps). I myself have a 2000 Z28 and have zero problems with it. i have 77K miles on it to boot. Don't get me started on Ford, cause the 98 Cobra I purchased new saw the mecahnic more then me.

Re: Rx8 reliability?

The new Renisis engine does not have apex seal problems as of yet. That had mainly to do with the turboed RX7's.

The boost levels tend to cause premature wear, as well as the increased heat. But I think this is just a case of a lemon.

Driving a rotary "softly" causes carbon build ups on the apex seals which leads to failure. They like to be wrung out every so often, not completely babied.
