engine temp sending unit
WTF? During an engine rebuild the mechanic put my engine temp sending unit in the hole that the oil feed line to the turbo is supposed to be. The manual is very difficult to see (since they assume you know where it goes). Obviously the sending unit needs to come out, but I think he put a set screw in the hole that the sending unit should go in. Can someone tell me where (very specifically) this should go? It looks like a big bolt with an eight inch wire and plug coming out of it. Thanks Again.

More details. The 1g oil feed is off the side of the head, the 2g is off the oil filter housing. I'm assuming its 1g and off the head, sicne that would at least be somewhere near the water neck, but I dont put anything past some mechanics
 There are several sending units there. One temp for the guage, one temp for the ECU, I also heard the 1g has one for the AC system as well. There is also the vacuum switch on the 1g as well. Is this a turbo car? I'm assuming its not, or the oil feed line would be not connected, and the turbo would be dead. I dunno. I'm a bit skeptical here. It would be pretty impossible to put a coolant temp sensor in the head, when as soon as you remove that plug (or feed line) oil trickles out. And for him to plug a hole that obvioulsy had something in it, would be a bonehead move for sure. More details. What size is the "bolt," what color is the connector?

I have a 1g turbo. Just paid the mechanic to rebuild all the internals, I took the engine out and I am putting it back in now. The engine is still out of the car. I haven't put the turbo back on yet- this sending unit is in the hole that the oil feed line bolt (hollow) goes in. I believe this is the 'Engine Coolant Temperature Sending Unit' pg 2-18 in my Chilton. It looks like a silver bolt, approx 1 inch in diameter. The top of the sensor is recessed in about 1 mm, an 8-10 inch wire is connected and then it goes into a small black plug. The plug has a number on it E1T15705. Thanks

Sorry to double post but I was thinking... I'm not sure that it is the engine temp sensor. It looks like it in the book and I don't think it looks like anything else I've seen. Does it sound like I am referring to something else? If all else fails, I can always head to the dealership and see if they know what it is.

The only sensor that comes to mind that has a pigtail on it is the knock sensor. I *think* all of the coolant temp sensors have a hard connector right on them, no wire. But its been a while since i worked on a true 1g motor that still has all this stuff in the right places.
In fact, The knock sensor has threads that are aboutthe same size, while all of the coolant type sensors are tapered threads and I highly doubt they would fit in the oil feed hole, hence my confusion earlier.

You're right. It was the knock sensor. I looked it up on the dealership's computer and there is no doubt. The real question is how did the mechanic get a knock sensor located in the block, mistakenly put in the head? I hope he is better with internals than sensors. I should know in the next 24 hours...
