Hey guy (and gals). I have this wierd problem with my speed and tachometer. it works when you start the car after it has been out in the cold for a while or something like overnight. But once I shut the engine off, it won't work if I start the engine up again. This is a regular thing on my 1995 Jetta III city edition. It has not had mods on it (yet), so I don't think that's the problem. Someone told me it myight be a dirty contact or something like that. Also, I am a total amateur when it comes to cars, so if you know of any good websites where it will show you how to take the thing out so I can fix the problem, it would really be appreciated.

One thing that I haven't gotten around to doing yet is cleaning the contacts on the cluster. You probably should do it anyway, since it might cause you problems later on if it isn't the source of the problem now. I'm going to be doing this in the next week or so. I'll let you know how that turns out.

I have the same problem with my speedometer and tach.
I tried cleaning the contact on the connectors, but that didn't help. I did check the speed sensor using the procedure in the Bentley Service Manual, and it looks like it might be the root cause Supposed to get between 9-14 Volts between the two outer pins, and I'm getting 168mV. Did anyone find the problem yet? If not, I'm gonna try to replace the speed sensor. Dave |

Re: Speedometer and Tachometer problem
You've got me confused, how many wires does your vehicle speed sensor have? The one on the top backside of the transmission, right? Not the engine speed sensor.

Same problem here.
I have found that if the car is left off for an extended period of time, perhaps 3 days or more, the cluster will function properly on the first drive after that, but after that, no go. Although I initially thought that temperature might have something to do with this, I have been unable to establish a reliable pattern. Too bad I can't control the weather. I have disconnected and reconnected the instrument cluster with no effect. |

Hello Again, I wanted to make sure everyone here was aware of another thread on this topic.
According to the last post, this problem is caused by a faulty circuit inside the instrument cluster. Replacement of the instrument cluster is the recommended solution. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...ht=speedometer |
