Whatever happened to.......

...The right to behave responsibly...?

Here's an old sign from the state of Montana.

Do we really need some pencil pusher putting arbitrary figures on what is safe and what is not?All drivers are different,and their cars range from 800cc granny wagons to 500+hp racing machines.Is a blanket speed restriction on the open road really neccesary?

Thats out of date by about four years. Montana now has daytime speedlimits. http://www.mdt.state.mt.us/speed_limit/

There is a lot of history as to why the speed limit used to be 'safe and reasonable' on the freeway. It wasn't trying to be the autoban (misspelled badly I'm sure) but with flat open roads, it let people drive at speeds they felt comfortable with.

This is a quite authoritative piece on speeds in Montana.

Re: Whatever happened to.......

There's always the Sturt Highway in the Territory. As soon as you leave SA, it's pretty much arrow straight to Darwin going North... the only the things to consider are:

i) The local fauna as the Big Reds and even the Greys can make a serious mess and make it difficult to hold the road;
ii) The B-Trains - which tend to wander a bit...

Re: Re: Whatever happened to.......

I was stationed in Great Falls MT, at Malmstrom AFB when the limits were non-existent. I was also there when they dropped that and made the limit 75 day, 65 night. There were countless accidents, where most, if not all ended up in fatalities. MT is notorious for 90+ gusts of winds on the flat open lands. when it hits your car, if your going super fast, your going to lose control. But.... it was fun hitting the WY/MT border and going 112 all the way to Great Falls.... sadly, it was as fast as my Truck would let me go.... damn speed limiter....
