Minor Frustrations

Ok ok, I'm not trying to say anything derogatory about anyone particular. I just want to know a couple of things.

I've noticed a lot lately around here that many things are oriented about how man posts a person does, or how long they've been a member at AF.

There are a lot of new people (like myself, I'd think) that seems to be kindly, or not so kindly, stating their opinion(s).

Are the "oldies'" opinions more valid and important than the "newbies"? Because seriously, just because you haven't been a member of AF for 2 years does not automatically make you a complete dipshit, right?

Take for example one person's comment: "Wow, its amazing how all the newbies are telling the old people how it is" or something to that effect. This kind of pisses me off because I may or may not know as much about cars as other people but I'd think my opinion would be respected, even if you don't agree with it.

Someone else's thread is just essentially bitching (no offense) about how this person is annoyed with all these 'booNs' in the forums!!

Ugh, I think this is starting to make this AF forums an unwelcome place.

Input, please.

Re: Minor Frustrations

Pisses me off as well, I've been here longer than 95% of the people who still post on this site, I was here in the pre-Purehonda days, not for too long before it embarked on AF, but in those days, newbies were actually welcomed to the forums, hence a majority stayed beyond 5 posts, now we have AF and people who registered in June 2003 calling themselves "old school"

This is an automotive site, n00bs can (and reguarly do) know more things than longer term members about all things automotive. It's mainly COT that we find this crappy attitude, hence why I seldom post here anymore- Go out to our vast car forums- MUCH better

I used to run a very large helpsite and discussion forum for a large company, and what you're describing there is commonplace in the majority of discussion forums.

People do post a lot, just to raise those magic numbers under their name, and often, people post a lot of shit to get the numbers up. Instead of engaging in discussion, which is the purpose of discussion forums, a lot of people will post stupid, 2 or 3 word replies, which often are absolutely pointless.

As far as those members who've established themselves on a discussion forum, I personally like to know they've been on the site a long time, and if they have a post count of 2, 3, 4, 5 thousand or more, I'm quite capable of working out for myself whether they're posting a load of shit, or whether they've an invaluable member of the site.

It's not how much you post, but what you post ... I've seen the mods and admins on here posting absolute shit, as well as the established posters, all or most of whom have made several thousand posts. My advice - just ignore posts made by such people when you see them, and maybe, just maybe they'll get the message and begin partaking in real discussions, which usually consist of more than a few short words or a smiley image.

hmm good thread..

yea i dunno. im a newb, but i like to be classified as just being here. I dont like it how permanent long time members dont accept my opninions and reffeir theirs more important than anything else.
Ive made a quite a few posts.. but yeh.
like in the other thread, i can get a little out of hand. ive had a mood and screamed out some pretty insulting stuff, which i regret, and got quick coments and signed some enemies allready. and theyre all long time members. yea i appologise, but even if i didnt want to recieve anymore posts frmo the thread, i didnt notice an "unsubscribe fmor this thread" in my email box untill a day later. otherwise it would be a different story.
Its just the comments that came out in the thread that bothered me. and i kept recieveing posts in my email which i didnt like. so i had my fare say and there i go.

i find this forum very welcome to new members and everyone welcomes them. but since then you have to also expect to some really nasty come backs at the same time. now im avoiding long time members. only because i dont like being treated like shit.

other than that, im open to anything. ive met one person off this forum personally, and im not abou tto leave so soon yet.

this is a whole load of rambladge. but it is in stress realease.. :P

this forum is like any other. i have no problem with it and i think its well managed. heh

Re: Minor Frustrations

been here 2 years, racked up a lot of posts, some of them light conversation, some have stretched my mind more than I'd care to remember.Spent most of my time off-topic,know very little about the technical side of this site, but think the people are great.Every new member changes the nature of the site. Each is an individual with their own skills, politics, and sense of humour.Whatever they bring to AF,they add to the collective intelligence of the site.It would be shallow to dismiss a stranger as being of no value, and it would be rude to insult anyone who thinks that our forum is a good place to make new friends. The alleged 'old hands' who have set themselves up as some kind of exclusive club so qiuickly should remember that we all had to find ourselves a voice at AF at some time or another. If you judge a person's value in terms of their postcount or their calendar presence on a site, you are a fool. It's what you say that matters, not the number of times you log on to say it.

Well said

I agree. Ive been here for a year and like to think that accordingly, I should act as though I represent this website, but I also feel that that means being level headed and treating everyone who signs up the way I would want to be treated (that is unless of course they instigate with me and make personal attacks). I will admit that there have been times that I have been on the "get the n00b" bandwagon, but Im sure that we all have at some point. I just hope Bobby, that your incidents and problems you have had wont cause you to leave, because if that's the case, that means we didnt do a good enough job of making you feel welcome.

Re: Minor Frustrations

The really good thing about this place is that we accept new people. I am new here, not necessarily to posting on a forum, but here I am new. And I know a lot about cars. I also agree, quality, not quantity.

I think a lot of this has to do with suspicion of people who show up recently and have few posts, because they are not familiar of them and may turn out to be idiots ( like me ) and post worthless garbage that is not of use to anyone and just inflames tension between people.

It just takes time to weed out the idiots from the actual posters...

They're stepbrothers "STFU n00b" is a bit of a joke between some of the longer staying members

I don't have a problem with newbies, I have a problem with newbies who come on here thinking they own the place, and ones that seem completely brainless. If I want to read new posts, I want posts I can understand not unintelligible gibberish. Newbies keep the place fresh, and there are a helluva lot of newbies here that know a lot more and are older and more mature than some of the "vets". Just don't be egotistical, and don't try to run the place from your first post, and FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY, TYPE PROPERLY.

And so endeth the lesson....
