Transmission switch

Hi, its me again with the snap in the front end. What does that switch on the shifter do that is labeled power and normal?. I thought my tranny was slipping because the tach goes up so far when you add a little throttle to it. It looks like that switch might make the torque converter lock up a little sooner when it is in the power mode. I sure hope this is the case. How much should the tach needle go up if you apply the throttle just enough so it does not down shift? mine goes up about 1500-2000 rpm.

As far the snapping up front I think it is the strut bearing plate. It only happens when I turn while applying the brake. I think this is just enough pressure to keep it from rotating , because when I let up on the brake is when the pop occurs. It all makes sense, but I sure hate to take it apart again and be wrong>

Thanks Guys

Dave A.

Re: Transmission switch

Trans Power Mode raises shift points 4-500 RPM, thats all it does.

Re: Transmission switch

In my car if I'm on the highway at 65 mph and I give it some throttle the torque conv. unlocks (feels almost as if it down shifted) and rpms go up.
A little more throttle and it down shifts into 3rd
This might almost feel like its slipping but its not

Re: Re: Transmission switch

You may have a problem. These engines don't produce a lot of torque and the car is heavy, so you do have to apply more throttle to get it to move. When you really wind it up it goes pretty good. That's the horsepower coming on. Try locking it in third gear, take it to 3k RPM, then punch it. If the response is quick and the tach doesn't jump way up, you're probably okay. Has the trans ever been rebuilt? Sometimes they get sloppy after a rebuild.

I have the same snapping sound. Others on this forum seem sto think that it is the control arm bushing. I'm going to replace it and see if that takes care of the problem as soon as the snow melts.

Re: Transmission switch

jjdewd brought up a good point. The car does have a variable lock-up converter, but it's designed to stay locked under high pressure. When you accelerate, even slightly, the RPM should not vary in relationship to the trans output to the road. It only reduces RPM after maintaining a given speed for about 15 seconds. Make sure your fluid is fresh and not low. Check it hot, idling, and in Park.

We've got a good transmission shop in town. They give out coupons for $29.99 examination & trans. fluid change. I'll take a $30 insurance policy like that any day given what these damn trannies cost.

Re: Transmission switch

That power-normal button on the shifter is simply electronic overdrive. Power mode just disables overdrive and keeps it in 4th gear, that's all.

That's incorrect. It's not a five speed automatic or a four speed with overdrive.

So what is it then, a six speed or a 3 speed? I will have to count the shifts next time, I can't seem to count on you for anything:-). I am taking her in to the dealer Friday and get her all fixed up for Christmas. Ho Ho Ho!!!!! I am going to have the dealer do an alignment and then go to sears and tell them where they screwed up; maybe I can get some of my $1250 strut money back.
