Wider tires on stock rims.

I am about to get some tires and I am wondering how much wider I can go that the factory 185 60H R14 tires size without rubbing or having sidewall problems?

They only reccemend the stock tire size. I know that you can go a little wider but I want to know how much.

Are you looking for a lower profile tire that is wider? The 185/60-14 is the lowest profile tire made for a 14" wheel. I guess it depends on how low your car is and if you're concerned about your speedo being incorrect...

Not to mention that most 14" wheels are only 5.5, 6 or 7" wide. I wouldn't go any wider than a 205 or maybe 215, but I doubt you'll find them in a 50-series (which would be closest to the size of your stock tires) for a 14" wheel.

Re: Wider tires on stock rims.

I talked to a guy at a tire place and he said that the widest I could safely go was 195 but I dont kno anything about tires. HE said they would be a little taller too. I dont really care about the height I just want more grip. Anyways would that be a noticeable improvement? or would it just be something that is in my mind?

Thumbs up

195 is the width of the tire in mm - so it would be 10mm wider than your stock size...and yes...that is about as wide as you can "safely" go...If you go more than one size wider (or narrower) than the designed tire size for given wheel, the tire bead and shit doesn't seal right, etc.etc..and I've seen extremes and wonder how the hell the tires stay on those tiny ass wheels (I live in Redneck country and see all kinds of weird shit )

As for them being a little taller that is because the 60 in the tire size is the sidewall height...it is in relation to the tire width...in this case 60% of 185mm...60% of 195mm would be roughly 6mm taller, so not much, given 25.4mm = 1inch.

I personally think 185/60s are too low profile and look silly...my Dad has those on his DelSlow, and I think 185/65s would fill the wheel well a little better, without looking all big and funky like 70 series tires do at 185 width...
