Question new axles when boots have split open

Does anyone know if axle boots can be replaced without removing the axles? I took my 93 Nissan Sentra in for servicing, and the mechanic showed me the boot at each front axle. Both had split, and he stated that the split would allow the grease to fall away from the axle eventually causing the axles to break. He said the only way to fix the boots were to replace them, and that required removal of the axles. The bottom line was they suggested replacing the axles also since it would only cost an addl. $80 for new lifetime guarantee axles.

Was I taken?

Thanks,

Leon Kirkman

Re: new axles when boots have split open

ummm... no. If your boots were split open your probably already caused some damage. Besides, if this is a car you drive aggressively, It's not worth the worry, just replace them every so often. If you're concerned about price buy a chiltons and to it yourself, it's not very difficult in most FWD
