93 sho tranny - od ng?

Greetings:

Have a '93 SHO (Yamaha engine) and in the past year
(sometime, I wasn't driving the car) the overdrive "stopped working"

let me qualify that:
if I'm driving the car in a no load situation, that is downhill
on a highway at OD type speeds, the tranny goes into overdrive
(rpms go down and if I hit the O/D off button, the tranny downshifts
to normal "D")

once level or any kind of load is back on the tranny, it immediately
goes out of overdrive.

Any thoughts on what to check first?

Car has 92K miles on it.

tnx,
rob

that seems normal to me, the tranny is supposed to be in overdrive on a highway, and on city streets otr with a hill it goes onto regular drive, if its automatic, you shouldnt have to push any button, a mechanic friend of mine told us to stay away from sho engines he works at the dealer and says they are always in, high performance engines are trouble. its probably electrical.

no, the problem is it will not go into overdrive at normal speeds and loads on the highway. it will only go into overdrive when my foot is off the gas (for example downhill).

pushing the o/d off button (and seeing that it works) makes me
believe it is not electrical, but I don't know this transmission at all.

does anyone know how the overdrive is controlled on a 93 taurus
tranny? vacuum or electrical or computer?

tnx

The transmission is computer controlled.

I can't offer much advice, but I would do this: there is a big plug that goes into teh top of the tranny, and I found mine soaked with ATF, which was causing my Torque convertor not to lock. I cleaned the plug out and reinstalled it, and voila! it was fixed. Its worth a shot, anyways!

The '93 ATXs are by far the weakest and prone to failure, the '94 trans was better and the '95 trans could actually be called reliable. Good luck!
