misfire and valve guides

Just wanted to know how many of you out there have experienced the "service engine soon" light flashing under heavy load ( uphill, freeway onramp, etc...) ....only to find out it wasn't electrical that caused the problem but bad valve guides. I own a 2002 Astro with 22,000 miles. I had a 1994 Astro and took it past 100,000 with no problems. What gives? While Chevy is not issuing a technical service bulletin that I have found, they are saying that this problem has happened before. How common is it?
Pete
