Engine Revs when clutch depressed

This is an intermittent problem, my favorite kind. My 1993 Ford Escort station wagon is a manual. SOmetimes, when I depress the clutch, the engine revs as high as 4000 rpms. Normally it drops off right away, but lately it has been holding steady at 3000 rpms or so. The problem is annoying, but I think also potentially dangerous. Probably, the vehicle will end up in a dealership unless I get some guidance. I am pretty handy mechanically, but I don't know where to start.

Re: Engine Revs when clutch depressed

try to bypass the clutch switch, it may be bad...... or it may be the speed control if it i locked in on position and the brake switch doen't work it make do that....... but try taking it to a shop and having them put a scan tool on it, that could give you the problem, and you can fix it easily.......

Re: Engine Revs when clutch depressed

Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) on the top of the throttle body, could culprit. Disconnect the battery to reset computor and see if it goes away and then comes right back, if it does its the IAC.
