Well, Lets see here. I went to my car this evening (94 Camry, 134k Miles, Standard Trans) to head off to work. Started it up, it started and died right away. I thought ok, must have let off the starter to early or whatever. Started it up again, just sat there and cranked. Thats all it does, cranks. Popped the hood, and my quick and dirty diagnosis was thinking that it might be a stuck injector because after I crank, it REAKS of unburnt Gas. Any ideas? How much do you think I'm looking at?

Was it damp outside?
If it was damp outside, then you had the same problem I've been having (fuel smell included). It involves moisture getting inside your distributer via a hairline crack or bad seal. To temporarily fix my problem, I simply sprayed WD-40 all over the distributer cap. It cures my startup problem every time (it lasts for 3-4 days before i need to spray it again). Try that the next time the car won't start. If it starts up, then you know you have to replace the distributer cap (or the whole unit). The cap is at most $15 I believe and the whole unit can't be more than $40.
It could also be spark plug wires, but that wasn't my problem so I don't have experience. |

You should do a search on "chewtoy" and read about my adventures
currently my 94 camry is back in the shop for an oil leak but my starting / stalling problem appears to have been remedied now. If I were you ... I would check the battery ... make the connections aren't corroded. Have you changed your fuel filter lately? Have you checked your spark plugs? My starting problem was either a bad fuel filter (very probable) or bad spark plugs (they were barely hand tightened on there). Good luck. |
