just wondering.. has anybody ever been so satisfied with the color of a model car body right out of the box that all he did was to clear coat it without having putting on any color coat???

Re: ever NOT paint the body..????

I suppose if you were building a model of a car that has a plastic body then it would be okay. Not too many plastic bodied cars about that I know of...

The bare plastic just wouldn't look realistic IMHO. To each ther own though.

Never

Don't care what color the plastic is, if you leave it unpainted, it'll just look like a plastic toy!- usually not a look I'm going for.

Sure David.

That's why when you see an auto wreck there is all that crumpled metal.

There are a couple of cars out there that have plastic body panels, but they still have a rigid steel frame underneath them, Saturn cars come to mind.

As for the original question, every model I have has had the body painted, it's part of the finish of a completed model in my opinion.

back in the early days of building for me I did, but that was back when I did'nt paint my stuff at all, I was only 10-11 years old, I never spray painted my first kit till I was 14. know, I spray paint everything.

the only unpainted kits I have are old Promotional vehicles. all the promo's I have are listed below, and are worth more unpainted then painted.
AMT 1998 Olds Intrigue
AMT 91 Geo Storm
AMT 91 Dodge Stealth
Brookfield 95 Chevy Monte Carlo

Sorta...
I built a Dodge Ram PU. Left the body unpainted black plastic. I polished the body and painted it in a two-tone red/black scheme, just painting the red part.
I'm happy with the result, considering it was a quicky 3 evening project.

Re: ever NOT paint the body..????

There was a thread by Bob (Zoomzoom) a while ago (called "who needs paint?" or something along the lines) and he showed two cars there that he hadn't painted, but polished the plastic instead. You pretty much could see no difference to a painted model. Unfortunately, the pictures in the thread have been taken offine. Too bad.

Nope...never! I never even thought of that, but since my paintjobs suck so much, I guess I'll give it a go.. you never know what is just around the corner....

Once. This was back in the 80's I built a Monogram '85 Trans Am which was molded in black. I sanded off the lines with very fine paper and polished then waxed the bare plastic. I seem to remember it looked superb but it was a long time ago.

I have a Lindberg Nissan King-Cab 4x4 SE-V6 model kit which is molded in black. The finish if amazingly glossy already and I suspect you could probably get away without painting it. I guess it's down to how translucent or opaque the plastic is. If it's very opaque then you'd proabably get away with it but I suspect only on something molded in black.

Re: ever NOT paint the body..????

yep! my first model, it was a revell yenko camaro, the model was from the 80's...anyways it was molded in yellow, and i didnt have an airbrush so i just polished it and it looked very good, no imperfections, perfect shine.

but i would never do that now, and i wouldnt do it with a model molded in white either.
