Could this mean transmission problems?

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum

I have a question about my Jeep Grand Cherokee with an Automatic transition. For the past couple of weeks I have been experiencing some strange behavior from my vehicle. When I accelerate on the freeway the car hesitates for about 5-6 seconds before pulling the car. It feels almost like the car is out of gas (but my tank is full).

Any ideas?

Welcome to the board! Is it the engine that pauses or does the the engine rev and the tranny slip? Possible that the fuel injectors are dirty and not allowing the fuel/air ratio to increase with acceleration. If you slowly accelerated does it still feel like it's stalling? What part of it syntom makes you think transmission?

To answer your question Rod the vehicle is 6 cylinder – 1995.

BJ, I have been contemplating about the injectors you suggested, do you think that the injection cleaner (the one you buy at AutoZone for $2.00) will do the trick. Also, during normal operation of the vehicle (on normal streets) everything works fine, it is when I try to get on the freeway I start getting this problems.

my 1996 jgc 5.2 v8 had the problem, i had the tranny flushed. how long has it been since you have had the tranny flushed?

Forgive me for asking stupid questions, but what is a “tranny”. And can it be done with minimum effort and tools or would I have to take it to the shop? Also how much will that approximately cost me?

Hi, "tranny" refers to your transmission. A do it yourselfer could tackel this chore but it's easier to take it to a good shop and have it done. The filter is replaced and the old fluid is replaced with new. This service should generally run about $40 to $80 depending upon the shop. I would recommend having this done if it has been a while. Thanks Jason or the answer. What about the fuel filter, do you think that needs changing too. I haven’t had any major tune-up on the car since I bought it. What ealse would you sujest me to include into the tune-up. I have a list, perhaps you could add to it.

1. tranny
2. spark plugs with spark plug weirs
3. tier pressure
4. ??????

Hi, so you've decided to get the tune-up done??? Here is what I would have replaced/checked while having the service done:
1. transmission flushed/new fluid
2. new spark-plug's and wires
3. Radiator flush (or at least checked and toped off)
4. Fuel filter changed
5. Serpentine belt checked
6. Tires rotated
7. Battery and alternator checked
Hope this helps you out. Anyone else have any other ideas??? This should be a good start. Take care~

I went ahead and fallowed you advice and replaced the transmission flushed, installed new spark-plug's and wires, replaced the fuel filter. But the problem is still there.

Any other ideas?

Your jeep has a throttle body assembly. There is a rubber air tube which runs from the big black air cleaner box so you can locate it very easy. Loosen the screw and remove the tube from the throttle body.
It will reveal a metal round hole. Look down it and there is a metal door which you can move with your finger by pushing it.
If this hole and behind the door are very dirty (black) buy some carb cleaner and get an old tooth brush. Spray the cleaner down the round metal hole while holding the door open. Take the tooth brush and clean the entire area. Do it more than once if needed. Then take the cleaner again and spray off the excess.
Reinstall the rubber tube and tighten the screw.

There is a motor inside this medal assembly.
When it gets very dirty it will cause your veh to die or hesitake on accelation.
This motor is called a throttle position sensor and DOES NOT move like it should if too dirty.

When you go to parts store to buy just tell them you need a carb cleaner and they will get you what you need.

hello juno i had the same problem with my grand cherokee your problem is the o2 sensors there is one on the front of the catalytic converter and one on the back. these are the shape and size of a spark plug.
i drove my self crazy with the fuel inect cleaners , throttle body etc.
try the o2 sensors i just replaced the one in front.

I didn’t do a lot of testing but so far its running smooth. I will test more tomorrow just to make sure.

If the problem comes back I will check the O2 Rush1.
