96 jetta problems

I have a 96 Jetta GL with about 112,500 miles on it, it's standard, 4 cyl, etc. I took it in to get the alternater belt replaced and while they were in there they replaced the air conditioning and power belts as well, they also bleed air from cooling system and filled with new anti freeze, because they said it was rusty. I picked up my car and after a couple of minutes driving the temperature light started blinking at me and then the temperature gauge reached up to 230 when it has never passed the middle. I took it back and they couldn't figure out what the problem was so they thought it might be the radiator, they took out the radiator and power washed it (I think that's what it's called), replaced the thermometer and now the temp. gauge is back to normal but the light keeps blinking at me, also, now whenever I am in neutral and have the heat on, the hot air turns cold but then will warm back up when I am in gear and driving, it has never done this before.

Maybe I am being paranoid but I can't figure out whats wrong with my car if you have any helpful ideas about what I should try that would be great. thanks

try sitting in neutral and rev the engine a little. if the heat turns warmer, it may be that your belts are loose. jett-n

I think that what you need is a new thermostat. Some of those "mechanincs" don't know anything about cars, so don't let them ruin your car. Just get a new thermostat in auto zone for 20 bucks and replace it yourself.

or if they already replaced it, i think they installed a wrong one that opens at higher water temperatures, that's why your car is cold. Have them instal exactly the thermostat that goes to 96 jetta.

No The 1996 Jetta There Is A Temperature Sensor Well.... Actually 2 Of Them Oneis On The Right Side Of The Head Of The Engine It Is On The "splitter" For The Coolant That Could Be Bad

The Other One Is Located On The Radiator.
If You Open You Hood And Look At Your Radiator It Is A Screw In Brass Sensor It Is Near The Top On The Right Hand Side Of The Radiator Looking Towards The Rear Of The Car Of Course Get Those Checked My 1996 Jetta Trek Went Through Both Of Them
