jeep cherokee starter switch ?

i have a 96 cherokee country, and if i start it in the morning and shut it off soon thereafter, it will not start back up for about 10 - 15 minutes. if i can get it to start back up before that, it's because i've started it in neutral. the other night i started it after not driving all day, and went about half a mile to a gas station to fill up.. and because i shut my engine off at the pump, it would not start. i thought it was commonplace, but after about 20 minutes i knew something was wrong. i was forced to call my father and we pushed it out of the way. the next morning my parents went to go start it, and it refused. they ended up towing it back to the house. my father worked all day on it, and ended up putting a button for me to push to start it. could someone who's versed in jeeps please help me out with what's wrong ??? thanks !

Re: jeep cherokee starter switch ?

XJ's had a common problem with the neutral safety switch on the side of the trans.I have never heard of this making a vehicle die, just restart problems.Does it start in neutral ? Or did it at one time.We replace one a month at our dealership.

it starts in neutral, but only after about 10 minutes, and sometimes just not at all.
