2001 sunfire abs light comes on
MY abs light seems to come on every winter on the cold/wet/slushy days.
I turn my car off and then back on and it is off for a little while but come back on. Can someone give me a reason for this. Or way to correct the problem. The dealer says it is because the roads are wet. It doesn't happen on the warm days. |

I used to have this problem with my sunfire as well. It turned out to be broken wires and once it was the ABS 'harness' causing the problems. Had it fixed several times at the dealership (under warranty) so can't give you a price quote for it.

Re: 2001 sunfire abs light comes on
I had the same problem. The cable (wire) is like $15, or it was for me anyways and it was less than an hour to change. My 2 cents - ABS is not the greatest invention. It only allows you to have steering control as you hit the brakes hard (you can do the same by pumping normal brakes without ABS). It actually takes longer to stop with ABS brakes, but again it does allow you to turn if you tend to tend to just slam on the brakes. If you are like me and have an extreme dislike for them, go under the hood and pull the ABS fuse and they will function as normal brakes (the ABS light will be on in your dash all the time if you can live with that), you can replace the fuse at any time and use ABS again.

Why would a broken wire cause the warning lights to come on when wet go off when warm and dry? I have exactly the same problem. When the snow is melting the lights (abs, traction control, and service) go on. When it is very cold and dry, or in the summer, the lights go out. Wouldn't the light be on continually if the wire was broken.

Re: 2001 sunfire abs light comes on
The wire may not be split all the way. If it is broken inside the cable, then temperature could tighten or loosten the cable causing the light to come on or off. Or wet and dry could affect the way the broken cable sits. I am merely making a suggestion, it could be another problem, but I looked under my front tire after my ABS quit working all together (the light used to go on and off) and i noticed a broken cable.

Re: 2001 sunfire abs light comes on
My sunfire had a similar problem which the abs came on, among others, only when it was wet. the lights were also pulsing etc. I just happened to pop the hood in the dark and saw the alternator arching out the back. I replaced the alternator and haven't had the problem since. The abs draws quite a bit6 of current which a failing alternator could trigger the light. Just thought you may like to check that if nothing else works.

Just got off the phone with the dealers
I have a 99 sunfire and the abs light and brake lights are both on. They came on this winter when Ice started to build up on my car, it is now warm and the lights are still on. Also, the ABS isn't working but the brakes still function properly. I took it to a dealer to have a recall fixed on a relay and told them to run a diagnosis on the brakes. The results are back and they want $550 to fix the one of two possible problems. I am planning to take it to another service center or fix it myself depending on how severe it is. Does anyone have any idea on how dangerous it is to run a car with the lights on, since the brakes are still functioning?
