UNICEF is seen as one of the biggest children emergency funds that are active today; they help millions of children around the world by setting up child shelters, by giving children life saving vaccines such as Vitamin A and Gavi. Their main purpose when they first came about on 11 December, 1946 was to meet the needs of children in Europe and China after World War Two. At that time UNICEF stood for United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. Their focus when they started was on only these two countries, but by 1950 they had broadened their help to all children and mothers in war torn or developing countries. At this time they adopted the name United Nations Children’s Fund, which they still use to today, although they have kept the original acronym. UNICEF is still running as strong as the day it was started.

UNICEF works a great deal with children, but specifically they are the only organization that works globally for children’s rights. They work with more then 160 communities and governments to help children and get them better health care, education, and protection for the children that are at risk with diseases. Although the focus for UNICEF is children, they also do work with mothers, families, and communities. For example, they have provided water pumps for communities, which protect the children from death and diseases, as they have clean water. Also they have started program such as Safe Motherhood projects which helps mothers to get through childbirth easier, and survive it, which will help the children again as they will give them a life with the support of a mother.

Educating Girls
UNICEF works greatly works with education, but mainly girls’ education. Education can get the children a better life and make the world a better place, but in third world countries girls are left behind, and that makes it hard to reach the goals. In many countries an educated girl usually has fewer children, and marries at a later age. Since she has fewer children, her kids are more likely to survive, be healthier, and better educated. She will be more valued at work, and she will be able to protect herself from HIV/AIDS.

Immunization
UNICEF works actively in providing vaccines to little children. At the present time vaccines protect three quarters of the children in the world against diseases and illnesses. Yet more then two million children die annually from diseases that could be prevented. That is why UNICEF has taken the duty to deliver these vaccines to the little children. Not only does UNICEF provide vaccines, but they also provide such things as insectide-treated mosquito nets to help families prevent Malaria. Currently UNICEF has given 40% of the children in the world vaccines, which makes them global leaders in immunization.

HIV/AIDS
Today more then half of the people infected with HIV/AIDS are under the age of 25. Fourteen million children are orphans due to this disease, and child death rates have risen sharply. UNICEF works with children and tries to prevent new infections. They help young children by giving them healthy decisions, by informing them of what to do and what not to do. They also try to prevent parent to child transmission of the disease, and offer support to orphans and little children that are made vulnerable to the disease.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF
Although the tradition of the Trick or Treat for UNICEF, actually started with a youth group that collected $17 in milk cartons that were decorated, it was soon adopted by UNICEF. Since then $119 million has been collected by going door to door, and it is also still collecting more and more. UNICEF uses this money to help children overseas and to buy supplies.

UNICEF has done great work, and has helped millions of children. From educating children, to immunizing them, to even getting them fresh water. UNICEF is making a great impact on the way that children growing up. Once a organization meant for only Europe and China, but now a global organization, that has made the greatest impact, and has changed millions of lives.
