4x4 trouble, please help.

hi, i have a 99 gmc suburban with automatic 4 wheel drive transfer. over the past few months the switch in the dash that controls 4x4 has been shorting out on me. what i mean be that is that first the right side of the switch (4hi and 4low) would not illuminate. today the left side (2wd and auto4) would not illuminate. i went and bought a new switch from chevy and plugged it in. the switch gets illumination now the gear numbering lights up, however the small square on each button of the switch that indicates which gear you are in doesnt NOT light up. along with the gear indicator not lighting, the tranny wont switch through the 4wd gears and the Neutral indicator that is located on the 4wd switch also will not light. any ideas? sorry for the long post, i hope its not too hard to follow. thanks in advance

i shouold also add that in the past when the switch first started acting up, i unplugged it and drove a shorrt distance with it out, which caused my cluster to show "service 4x4". should i unhook the battery and reset the ecm?
