theres a vacum switch on top of the transfer case that sends vacum too the front axle diaphram to engauge the front axle these are known to go bad.

You may also want to check the diaphram itself. Its mounted right under the battery tray (stupid place for it), and it acid leaks down, it will be destroyed. That is probably your most likely problem area. The ball switch in the transfer case usually gets stuck closed, and causes your 4wd (front wheels) light to stay on.

Once you have the battery tray out, push the diaphram and see if it moves. Your best test would be to get a vacuum tee, and split a constant vacuum line, and apply vacuum directly to the diaphram, and go for a spin, and see if the 4wd works. It may also be the cable from the diaphram to the axle not working.

Good luck!
