The best place is lower Mong Kok but PM "Joecwlaw" as he'll help you I bet as he lives there.

Oh yeah, there are about 5 major (and a few minor) shops clustered in an area of mong kok, but you'll most likely need a map to find them. I just returned from there with about 6 kits in hand! It's model heaven for sure.

The absolute cheapest are usually Universal Models (I just picked up the Tam Enzo for about $15US and the Hasegawa Celica for $10). There's one on the top floor of Plaza Hollywood --> Diamond Hill MTR station, and one in Causeway Bay --> Look for the Toys R Us, it's in the same mall). Plus, the Causeway Bay one don't seal their models so you're free to open them up and inspect their contents before buying.

I can email you a map if you need. I think I have sitting around here somewhere...

Re: Hobby shops in Hong Kong

If you are talking about the Mong Kong Area.. I think I could help.
There is a Universal Model on Waterloo Street near the KCR passing, right beside the Mazda showroom and the box is openable as well.
There is actually a "model shop street" in Mong Kong which is the Kwong Wah Street. The whole street id full of model shops.
Furthermore, there is 2 bigger shop along the Sai Yee Street between Argyle Street and MongKong Road.

The Universal on Waterloo is gone... It closed down within the year. It's a hair salon or something now.

Oh!! I'm going to HK (for a stop)in ~1 weeks. I'm only staying 1 night because I'm just waiting for a flight to thailand the next day. Do all the model shop open late like 'til 10pm?? If it's close to the hotel I'm staying, I want to buy something in HK too. I'm staying in the Regal Airport hotel. Is it far away from the Mong Kok??

PS: Any place sells nice clothes??

Thanks.

Man, actually these model shops close at around 8:00 pm. And the Regal Airport Hotel is far away from Mong KOK. IT will take you at least 1 hour by airport bus. If you take TAXI, it will cost you at least US$40 to there. NOT WORTHY to go by taxi.

For clothes, you might need to go Tsim Sha Tsui or Admiralty. Both places are far away from the airport, too. It might take you at least 45 minutes by subway.

GOOD LUCK. And enjoy your time in HK.

I know those ones in Mong Kok close at around 8-9pm (latest). Universal is never open past 7... Best bet is probably to take one of the express buses out or even the airport express --> MTR --> MTR. But hey, that also means you'll be lugging your loot across Thailand..!

clem..

Haha, smartass... I did, I walked all the way down to that side street with the 2 toy shops (and pet stores -- what a weird street) and that supposedly famous fish ball place that got in the newspaper (I think they taste like crap).

Oh well... Guess it'll have to wait till next time I am there! Should be next year at this rate. =) One thing I do find though, is that I always have to shop around. There isn't one place that is cheaper than the other for all the stuff that I want, although I find UML is still generally the cheapest, but their selection of non-tamiya stuff is sometimes not that great. There's also a UML in Sha-Tin, but it's pretty small... Is that all of them? Plaza Hollywood, Causeway Bay, Mong Kok, and Sha Tin?

clem..
