Unhappy ABS light & Emergency Brake light on

Hello,
I have a 1999 Grandam SE V6 automatic.
The 2 indicators ABS and the Emergency Brake signals won't turn off. They appear only when I accellerate, but when I first turn on the engine it is off. Could my brake pads be in need or replacing(I just had them replaced less than 1 year ago) I don't hear any squeaking or screeching noises when braking. What could be wrong? It seems that there is always something going wrong with my car now that my extended warranty is over.....

Re: ABS light & Emergency Brake light on

I know exactly whats wrong , happens to me from time to time. If your Emergency brake on signal doesnt disengage your abs light will stay on and keep your abs system off. It may be the emergency brake is stuck slightly , it tells your computer that the brake is on and the car is moving and as a safety measure it disengages the abs. Nothings broken , just make sure you try to unstick the E-brake , pull it up a little further than normal when your car is off. Turn the car on. If only the Park brake symbol is on your abs will work. Before putting it in gear , take the park brake off , see if the daytime running lights come on , if they do your park brake has succesfully disengaged and problem solved. If not the cable could be stuck. Message me a reply to see how its goin.

Re: ABS light & Emergency Brake light on

I tried your suggestion and the light is still on. Not only upon accelerating, but all the time. I am guessing that maybe the cable is stuck...can you tell me where I can find this cable? (I did bring it in to Canadian Tire, but they didn't find anything wrong with the brakes either--a big waste of $$)
Thanks in advance.

Re: ABS light & Emergency Brake light on

i also have a grand am (1997) where the abs and brake lights are on. I replaced the front brake pads, and filled up the master cylinder reservoir, disconnected the batter to attempt to reset the puter, but both lights are still on. I haven't checked the ebrake yet, but a little tip for you regarding on whether you need to replace pads or not.... if one of your reservoirs on your mastercylinder is low on fluid, and it appears that nothing is leaking (usually the rear chamber) then it is a pretty good sign that you are soon in need of new pads. if you have rear drums, this trick does not work, however.

Re: ABS light & Emergency Brake light on

just the slightest bit of low brake fluid will send the brake light on and that light will always trip the ABS light. Hence the ABS will not work. Check car for leaking break fluid and fill master cylinder to get the light to go out. Most likely a rear wheel cylinder is leaking.
