Talking ERG Valve

My daughters 94 Cavalier has been diagnost with a bad or dirty ERG valve. Can it be cleaned? I have looked for a new one on several online parts dealers and they all want anywhere from 165.00 to 220.00 bucks for a new one. The car is not worth much more than that. And......... since dad will have to probably have to buy/clean it, I would rather clean the old one. She's 27........sure wish she would find a husband.

Someone on here said they had purchased one for 50.00 bucks. Was it "hot"?

Re: ERG Valve

We all know that a good woman is hard to find. You think they say the same thing about us??????????

That seems high for an EGR valve. Get access to it and unplug the vacuum line from the valve. Get a long piece of hose and plug that in to the valve. Suck on the hose (clean off the end of the hose, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth) and see if it holds vacuum, or if you can keep drawing air through the hose.
If it doesn't hold vacuum the valve will have to be replaced. There will be an 8 digit number stamped into the top-- 1708???? -- I have a few good ones for "just in case" emergency uses.

To clean one, you can get a couple fingers between the spokes and work the diaphraghm up and down while spraying carb cleaner into the passage.

Good luck,

Re: ERG Valve

Yes you can clean one but be sure not to hit the electronics that control the EGR. You can damage the control and the computer if the circuit bridges. Remove the two bolts and use carb cleaner and a childrens tooth brush. You will have to buy a new gasket later on.

wow 165.00 to 200... Yikes, I guess the 55 bucks I paid for mine a year ago was a great price.
