My 98 Camry's 4cyl engine locked up for no apparent reason. Toyota has a customer satisfaction campaign for their engine seizing problems. It covered 4cyl engines less than 6 years old. Toyota completely replaced my engine at no cost and provided me a rental car.. the coolest part is this car was purchased used with over 60K miles and no warranty.

Hi,
That's great that Toyota replaced your engine. I just bought a 4 cyl 66k miles 97 Camry and have heard about the engine sludge problem. I guess I'm not covered since the car's more than 6 yrs old. I'll call Toyota tomorrow. |

The Toyota sludge program is for 8 years unlimited miles and includes a number of Toyota and Lexus models, all beginning with 1997. The V-6 is covered through the 2002 model year and the 4 cyl. through 2001. It is for unlimited mileage.
In most cases I have heard of, Toyota requires that you provide proof of maintenance to be eligible for repairs. This is usually impossible for a used car buyer unless you make sure you get all the records when you buy it. Everyone should keep all maintenance receipts on this cars and if you can afford it, go to the dealership for oil changes. One guy I know was denied getting it fixed because he had gone to a bunch of different places for oil change including Jiffy Lube and Toyota siad they thought Jiffy Lube lied about changing the oil. If you get the maintenance done at Toyota, they could not deny responsibility. |

I have a 1998 Camry LE (4cyl). According to the place we bought it from, they previous owner had come there for oil changes every 3000 miles. When I bought it, it had 26,000 miles on it and I changed it to Mobil 1 5W-30. It now has 47,200K on it. I change my oil about every 8,000 miles. Do you think that I will have this dreadful sludging problem at all? Also...... for the first time today I heard a clicking/chattering under the hood. It's usually used for town driving but my dad took it 250 miles for a football game last weekend. What could be the problem?
Thank you! |

Synthetic oils don't have the sludging problems. The 250 mile drive probably did it some good. The 8000 mile oil change interval is probably too long on this model, even for synthetic. The oil still does pick up impurities and combustion particles over time.
My suggestion would be to change synthetic oil at around 5000 and never past 6000 miles. Remember Toyota recommends oil changes at 5000 miles in their manual, but at 3000 miles if you talk to them. Because I like to err on the side of caution in these vehicles, I use in my 2000 Camry a premium oil which is a synthetic blend (Vavoline DuraBlend) and change it every 3000 to 4000 miles. That way, it's a little cheaper than the full synthetic, but it has a better lubricating and temperature capability than regular oils. With regular oils, change at around 3000 miles and there should be no problem. The clicking chattering noise could simply be from a bad tank of gas. Try a new tankful. And change that oil if it's up around 8000 miles since it was last changed and see how it sounds. |

Also... did you have all service records for the 3K / 60K maintenance and how many miles d'u have on it? Where could one find details about Toyota's CS campaign online? Thanks DFox |
