To infinity and beyond - the sequel

Bush Said To Want New Lunar Program

UPDATED: 7:35 p.m. EST December 4, 2003

President George W. Bush may be preparing to put the United States back on the path to the moon.

Several news Web sites -- especially those from the United Kingdom and Australia -- reported that manned missions to the moon could result in a permanent presense on Earth's only natural satellite.

It would be the first time in more than 30 years that people walk on the moon.

News.com.au reported that Bush will make the announcement either on Dec. 17, the 100th anniverary of the Wright brothers first flight, or in his State of the Union address in January.

White House Pres Secretary Scot McMellan said Thursday that no policy announcement regarding the space program are expected "in the near future."

The United States is the only nation that has landed people on the moon. In July 1969, Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the lunar surface, as part of the Apollo 11 mission, which eventually included five other lunar landings.

The lunar program was brought to public attention in the 1960s as the United States sought to catch up in the space race with the Soviet Union, which had launched the first manmade satellite, Sputnik.

In May 1961, President John F. Kennedy told Congress, "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth."

NASA says that program cost a total of $20 billion.

Yea, i saw a few different interviews of this today. They all seemed to suggest that the actual reason for going to the moon again is in preparation in making an ever larger attempt at landing on mars. See what the flag and space rover look like. I wonder how much they've changed if any?

Way to waste money! I can understand the interest in Mars, but we have already been to the moon, and know that there is nothing of any interest or worth there... It's made from the same rock that the Earth is, we know where it came from...

Putting a man on Mars would be very difficult, and very expensive. The trip would take years, and would require some form of self sufficient capsule that could grow it's own food. This is why NASA has not even been considering this idea.

How sinister, I have discovered Dubya's REAL reason for going to the moon!

The point of going to the moon is to be a jumping off point to go to Mars.

Considering how much fuel they're going to have to take with them just to get back off of Mars, they'll need a place to launch from. Some of their test will probably include launching from the moon, landing on the Earth and then taking off again to head back to the moon.

If they can accomplish that, then they’ll have one of the biggest obstacles surmounted.

Going to Mars isn’t a waste of money. Continuing to dump trillions into a social programs that accomplish nothing but reward the lazy and stupid is a waste of money. Money isn’t the issue with social ills, its personal responsibility.

I’m having a bad day so I’ll be crude. I’m tired of having my hard earned money taken and given to some fucking welfare whore who thought it was better to skip school, smoke crack down the block and can’t figure out why they can’t get a job. Give them one year to get their act together and put in some fucking effort or stuff them in the wood chipper. Instead of helping the people who really need it, we’re now expected to help everyone who’s a lazy fuck.

I’ve just spent two hours repairing a 6 million dollar HAP (housing assistance payment) for xxxx housing authority which are direct handouts for people who need help paying the fucking rent. It’s a $150,000,000,000 a year industry. Half the fuckers getting the help don’t need it. They’re parents learned how to play the game so they pick up on that. I earn about six figures a damn year and I could get fucking HAP assistance. What a fucked up SOCIAL ENGINEERED PROGRAM! FUCK! Waste of fucking money right the fuck there and I've seen it for the 11 years I've been in this business.

They could launch from the international space station, if they put the money they'll spend with this moon idea into that instead...

Trillions of dollars? Programs that do nothing but reward the lazy? What happens when you lose your job, like millions of Americans have in the last few years, and can't find another one, because there isn't enough to go around? What happens when UI runs out?

Do you really believe everyone on welfare are just too lazy to get a job? That's absurd. I'm sure there are many who are, but until you can come up with some proof of the statistics, it's all academic, and not even a very good topic.

When I pay my taxes, a very small percentage of that goes to welfare. I know there are people who are just exploiting the system, but for the little money they cost me, I have the constant assurance that no matter what happens to me, I'll still have a place to live, food to eat, and be able to pay the bills. That's the idea of welfare. It's social insurance, everyone pays into it, so that when you're down on your luck, you won't starve to death on the streets.

It keeps people off the streets, and cuts down on crime. What if those people were all out on the street? Think of it. Hundreds of thousands of homeless wandering the city streets... Not very appealing, is it. The US has some of the lowest taxes in the world, so please, don't sound so appalled that a minute fraction of your income goes to helping those who can't help themselves.

As you said, you make damn near 6 figures a year. That's quite a bit of money, enough that you don't have to worry about where your next meal is coming from. I realize that you have worked very hard to get where you are, but there are many people working 10 hour days in awful jobs just to survive. They're working just as hard and they don't even know where their next meal is coming from. There are millions of people who rely on those social programs, don't write them all off as lazy bums, it's VERY hard to escape poverty, especially if you are born into it.

As I said – there are people who need help. I also used my salary to show that there are people eligible to get that help, but don’t actually need it. If it wouldn’t cost me my job, I could give you names, addresses, phone numbers and social security numbers of thousands of people who earn 50K+ (families of 4 or less) who are getting subsidized housing. That’s the shit I’m talking about. Hundreds of billions have gone to these people over the last decade – and this is only the Section 8 program. One day I’ll rant on LIPH.

I agree. Remember back in the early/mid 90's, Old Dirty Bastard(a rapper for those who don't know who he is) picked up his welfare check on mtv and was taken there in a limo. The guys a moron but he did a good job of exploiting the problem. If i remember correctly his quote was "who's gonna pass up free money?". And you would think the welfare system would have changed after that, but nope. There are some people that need it, but no one deserves to receive it for years and years and years. EVERYONE CAN GET A JOB!! There is something called disabilites act. And i believe that includes not descriminating against the poor. I personally think that indepth investigations need to be done before someone receives welfare. And if they fucked up and decided to skip school and gang bang or whatever instead they don't deserve any help. That's their own fault. So go to work at mcdonalds and stay off the streets.

Good to see that Yogs is benefitting from his country's welfare program.

I'd rather see my tax dollars returned to the community than pissed up the wall in futile wars or other multi-billion dollar photo opportunities.

Imnstead of invading Iraq and going to Mars, perhaps Bush should have tallied up the cost to the taxpayer and asked for their input.

Space programs are a waste of money until they can improve the survival rates for astronauts. The percentage of critica equipment failures in the space shuttle is far higher than they would ever permit for any other transport industry. If they can't design a craft that doesn't come apart on takeoff, the idea of going to Mars is an expensive joke.

Space programs are a waste of time unless they have a valid purpose. I find it hard to believe that Bush would be willing to throw tens of billions of dollars at this program for the sole purpose of science and exploration.

Didn't Bush mentioned he wanted to rekindle the Star Wars program a couple years ago? I can just see it, Georgie wants his own private moon base.

Let me get this straight.

You people who insult America wasting money going into space, all congratulate the Peoples Republic of China for going?

So its alright for a communist country that doesn't respect human rights what-so-ever to go there?

But America which still has its problems, but is the worlds most free country shoudn't be allowed in space?

But hey I can see one valid purpose for getting onto the moon and beyond, to get away from the socialists of earth.

sarujin - it would have been ok if it were someone more socialistic that had said he wanted to rekindle the space program. Some people can't see past their hatred for bush regardless of the subject matter.

Man was not intended to live in space.Doesn't matter who is in charge,or whatever country they are from,it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.Anyone who thinks that you can take a species out of its evolved environment and establish a viable colony in entirely unsuitable conditions is a dreamer. It has taken us over a hundred years to develop air transport,we have yet to make it foolproof and consistently profitable, despite huge investment. And compared to a trip to mars,a transatlantic flight is a walk in the park.

How is it dreaming to take man out of an evolved environment?
Columbus did it, Tasman did it, Cook did it. As well as many other hundreds of explorers in the last millenium.
They were seen to fools, idiots and dreamers. But were they? They had massive influence in making the world what it is today.

And yes Man is not intended to live in space? So? Man is not intending to drive a car, use a computer, watch television and almost ever single other activity we do! but we keep evolving, to meet new challenges and activities.

And yes air travel isn't foolproof, but neither is being alive. More people just drop dead for some biological reason then they do from any manmade contraption.

Plus I was looking for stats which I couldn't quite find, but how many people have actually died in space programs?
Apollo 1 - 3
Challenger - 7? (I can't remember and 5 min of searching isn't giving me answers)
Columbia - 7

3 or 4 people in something before apollo 1, as told in below post.

That isnt that many deaths for how many objects the Americains have lauched into space. Considering only 1 of them actually happened in space. Hell the crew of Challenger didn't even die till the enclosed part of the shuttle they were in struck the atlantic.

There were hundreds more deaths of people in the start of air-flight. Infact there still is more!

But hey if you 'great' Clinton or something had said lets go to space, you'd all be praising him.

But since its President Bush, you just have to insult it.
