they connect to the top of your existing shock, and replace your springs. you can get aftermarket shocks if you want, i would. i really like the looks of tokico illumina 5 way adjustables coming out. they're already out for 4th gens and coming soon for 5th+.
the benefit of coilovers is that they are ride height adjustable, most go from 0-4 inches with and include a wrench, my friend has coilovers on an accord that adjust by twisting a knob with your hands in opposite directions. if you buy springs and shocks/struts instead you have to pick a specific height and stick with it.
i'm planning on lowering my car after this winter and i'm planning on a minor drop in height. i'm gonna get the tokico illuminas and H&R springs: 1" drop in the rear 1.3" in the front. maybe a little more, but no more than 2"
the downside is that you may have to grind the top of your shock down to make it fit, unless you get a direct fitment for your car.
