Question performance

Hey everyone with a 3.4 DOHC. I was thinking about how I could get back that 270-280 horsepower that my engine was originaly intended for. I wanted to know if anyone has done any real expensive and real heavy-duty taking the engine apart mods. For example, boaring out the engine or shaving down the heads, port and polish, or if you can cam it out, or anything like that. Let me know, Thanks

Re: performance

Better find a different transmissin first...or have yours heavily rebuilt. That's the reason why your car doesn't have the 270hp that it was SUPPOSEDLY supposed to have.

Re: performance

Well, I have not seen many people remaking their 3.4DOHC. The transmision is a good place to start but my 93 Z-34 never had 270bhp. The best it could do was 225bhp. What generation is your 3.4DOHC because the stock 3800SC engine pumps 240bhp and with mods you can push it to a littleabove 300bhp. I would love to know what type, year or series your engine is that stock 3.4dohc has 270bhp. I would have to get one of those for my 93 Z34

Re: performance

The car now doesn't have 270hp but thats what it was orignialy designed for but thanks to my tranny it was cut down to 210hp and 215 ft tq. My question was just to see if anyone modded an engine like mine
( 3.4 DOHC) but because of the tranny I can see why thats a problem.

Re: performance

Is that is the case then I can install a turbo or SuperCharget to my Z-34 because basically the engine is the same. So if your car is 3.4 DOHC and is SC or TURBO then I can look for those parts(whatever that applies) and install it on my car

Re: performance

I think you are alittle confused or I am confused because my car isn't turbocharged or supercharged. The engine wouldn't be able to handle the compression and the tranny certainly wouldn't be able to handle the power at all. How ever it has been done, but not without intense modification to the engine and transmission. Most use the getrag 5 speed from an earlyer GP. And yes the z-34 has basicly the same engine because I owned a '93 z-34 before I got my GTP.

Re: performance

Yup, you are correct. I assumed your car was either SuperCharged or Turbo and that was myu mistake. Then how come your car was supposed to have 270 if the Z-34 only comes with 210?

Re: performance

Various people and web sites i have been on told me anywere from 270 - 281 horsepower, but once again because of the tranny the power was cut down. Lots of pro's said that they heavily retared the ignition and cut fuel way down and other various things. And its not just my engine that was suppose to have this power your and every other 3.4 was designed for this too. I'm looking for ways to get this power back and I have found alot of ways and mods that i can do this but right now i dont have lots of money laying around and plus i need the car everyday.

Re: performance

WHite, if you are for real i would definetly want to know what those are. I have my Z-34 sitting on the garage waiting for some cash to put in the oil retainers. I replaced the tranny 3 years ago. I know that engine was supposed to give a lot more but when running I am really dissapointed to the 210 ceiling. Please tell me what are the mods now is the chance to make my car really acceptable.
I am not using it and is the time to make it a power toy.

Re: Re: performance

I don't think anyone knows for sure what they did to remove the power from DOHC 3.4....IF infact it had that power in the first place. That has also not been proven to be a fact on any of the GP boards (so far).

The LQ1 motor was originally being designed for a FWD Camaro. That of course never happened, and it got dumped into the W-body platform.

If there is ANYONE that could help you add power back, it would be the guys at www.60degreev6.com

There is also a guy that turbo'd his DOHC motor... http://www.brian89gp.com

Re: performance

Theres still lots of ways to get some of that power back and right now and especialy if i dont want to supercharge or turbo your engine.
Go to www.rsmracing.com and www.fastfwdperformance.com and that will help you out. You can port and polish your heads, intake Lower and Upper, bigger intake, cold air , exhaust, msd ignition and thats all i can think of off the top of my head. Other things that are good are the light weight underdrive pully from FFP and the polly dogbone motor mount to transfer alot more power to the ground.
I have been trying to find some cams for my car but i'm not sure they make any aftermarket. If anyone knows were i can get some from let me know.

Re: performance

I will check your sites out(Rom and Whitew) but I am reluctant to port heads and that kind of stuff. I prefer the bolt on kind of mods.

The guy that runs www.60degreev6.com can help you out with cam regrinds. He apparently has a few setups that work. You can also post over at the www.w-body.com forums or the 88-96 forums on www.clubgp.com He posts at those sites as well....and he knows a lot about the DOHC motor.
