headgasket question..
About to replace the HG on 95 Neon...
Where can I purchase an MLS gasket and head bolts, and for rougly how much? Is there any way I can check the head for warpage/cracks..this is the 2nd blown HG...my mother brought the car to a mechanic and they tested the car and said it is the HG...it has been overheating even after we replaced water pump, temp sensor, thermostat, fluid....hopefully this will do the trick... and the guy told her the reason her HG blew was because the protective plastic piece under the car was missing...i guess one of this pieces main purposes was to direct air to the engine to help keep it cool...anyone ever heard of this... thanks |

Re: headgasket question..
The man you spoke to is full of crap, the radiators job is to cool the motor and prevent overheating, not plastic shrouds and plates under the car. Your best bet would be to go to a local dealership for the gasket and bolts. You might be able to reuse the bolts, but I belieive that the motor in your neon uses torque to yield bolts, meaning you torque them to a certain amount, then add a quarter of a turn or a half a turn, whatever the case may be. These type of bolts must be replaced each time. As far as head warpage and cracks goes, you would do well to take the head to a machine shop and have them check it. They can usually repair any warpage or cracks for a fee. After you fix the head, you should try to find the cause. You might have a clogged radiator, leading to improper cooling, which could have caused the motor to overheat and blow the gasket in the first place or warp the head.

yeah i hear ya man,,a lot of those garage mechanics are full of Sh!T...
Is there a way to test the radiator though....i changed the coolant out before and flushed it real good and the water pour through it rather easily so..I dont know?? I ve replaced almost everything that is a part of the cooling system ..... water pump, thermostat. temp sensor unit,coolant...only thing left is radiator Does the heater core have anything to do with cooling the car??? |

yes the heater core is in the cooling system. actually its in the passanger side dash and acts like a 2nd radiatior and is what the heat comes from in your car. There are radiatior hoses that connect to it that could be clogged.

what is the best way to clean off the old HG...like the parts that are melted to the block and head...kinda looks like carbon i guess... Oh and what was funy is the back 8 valves (exhaust) were white and 1 looked rusted a bit(sign of a BHG)..is this normal.. |

Re: headgasket question..
u should definatley replace the h.g being u have it takin a part. your oil should have been real milky if your h.g was bad which it sounds like it is, thats probably why your valves seemed rusted from antifreeze being in your oil thats what caused the rust most likely

You can clean the head/block with gasket remover and a wooden or plastic scraper; don't use metal of course. However, I've found the best way to clean the head/block is to get yourself some roloc bristle disc (3m part number 07528) and an air grinder. It'll clean to a high shine in no time at all. Since you'll have to send the head out anyway you don't really have to clean that yourself. Check with them but the shop will likely do that as part of their service. http://products3.3m.com/catalog/us/e...er/output_html IIRC my exhaust valves looked that way too I had assumed that it was normal. |

First, shroud under car is not to cool engine in no way shape or form.
Second, one way to tell if its possibly BHG is to drain oil and check for antifreeze or water in oil. Third, any good shop should be able to check cooling system for you I think its like $39.00 for 16 point inspection.(dont quote me). Do you get any check engine light? If so take it in and have it checked the light should tell whats wrong. Or get chiltons book and check your self. I believe its turn ignition on then off three times then count the flashes this will give you the number to look for in Book. Its been awhile since I've done it this way so maybe do a search on diferent neon sites to see exact way to check codes yourself. |

Re: headgasket question..
Joe321 has some good advise brokedownneon!! You can check the head for warpage yourself, but will need a straight edge and some feeler guages. Look for more than .001" of warpage between the combustion chambers and along the full length of the head. If you're seeing .004" or more when checking across the length of the head, you better send it out. Regardless though, a machine shop is the best place to find a not so obvious crack!

nother update...sent the head to a shop for a valve job, cleaning and surface so it will be kickin like new soon....here is another question...
' There is still coolant in the block...it's below the level of the lower radiator hose so pulling that wont do me any good...how do i get that coolant out? (without having to remove the whole engine) ...I think a few tiny tiny pieces of gasket may have fallen down there...dont want any trouble.... thanks another question...do you have to spray liquid gasket on the mls gasket...in the instructions it said you should....any recommended products? |
