Chirping Sound new Explorer

I bought a 2004 XLT Sport last week. I instantly heard a bird chirping in my engine. The bird chirps faster as I acclerate and it is is very noticeable when backing off the accelorator. I just had it into the dealers and they told me they don't hear anything - ARGH!

The bird chirping is like torture. Anyone else experince this and know what it may be. I thought it was a bad belt pully but now I'm thinking the drive-shaft. Oh..and their is a fierce clunk when I turn right in four wheel drive.

Any diagnosis. I'm pissed.

If you only bought it 2 weeks ago, give the serpentine belt a chance to seat. If you are still having the birdies, spray some belt dressing on the belt (both sides) and pulleys. Be careful of the fan! See if that helps. Also does the birdies sing when you are moving or stationary and are you in drive or neutural? Try it stationary in Drive (idling) and in neutral, if no difference then problem is not driveshaft. My guess is your belts.

As to the clunking. Remember that the car has 3 settings, Auto, 4X4 High and 4X4 Low. It you are in Auto, four wheel drive will kick in if the computer senses a need to engage 4X4 and this will make a clunking noise. I get that in my 03 XLT at low speeds occasionally when making tight turns. You didn't mentioned the type of ground you were on when you where in 4X4.

I have a 2002 Explorer xlt bought new last year, it started chirping at about 2000 miles. I am currently overseas an the service here sucks. First time I when to dealer they tried to spray the belts, worked for about a second then got worse, then he said I need a new pulley adjuster, put it on still chirping. So this is where I am right now, decide to wait till I get back to states a few months to get this fixed. It is very annoying, It's worst when you first start it, and continues while you drive it. Sometimes it stops, but not to often. It does it in Neutral, Drive, idling all the same. I read a few articles about this problem but no ever said what the problem was or that Ford told them it was normal I don't think so they are going to fix my truck, I didn't pay 30,000 for a truck that chirps like a bird.

Try the Water pump pulley, an please keep me informed so i can fix the problem.

I appreciate the responses I got to my problem. I am currently out of the country but when I return this week I will test all solutions. I also have another appointment with my friendly neighborhood Ford dealer. I'll report on the progress. My guess too was the serpentine belt - so here's hoping.

tighten or replace the serpentine valve

Took it back to Ford here in Greece, they told me it 's the belt adjuster again, even though they just replaced it a couple months ago, but can't do it until after holidays, it's getting worse when you give it gas.

The dreaded dealership has had my Explorer now for 5 days. They say they have isolated the chirping noise in the torque converter, and are replacing it. Kind of spookey for a brand new vehicle.

Anybody had this done? I'm somewhat worried to have such a serious procedure done to a brand new vehicle. Arrgh!

The Dealership here in Greece still says it's the Belt adjuster, so they will replace it on Wednesday, i'll let you know if it fixes the problem.
