Will anyone tell me where the fuel filter is located on my 99 Intrigue?
Thanks. Great site by the way!

Re: fuel filter whereabouts

It should be in the area of the rear driver-side tire. It's a silver (or possibly rusted) cylinder. Be very careful when changing it if it is rusted. A member of my car club just tried changing his rusted one, and he screwed up the nut real bad.

Go to the auto parts store and buy a new one before you try and change it (you would likely have thought of that on your own). Once you have the new one it is just a matter of crawling around under the car and playing "where is Waldo" to find the old rusted part that matched yours. As someone said it is at the back on the drivers side.

The side of the filter that goes to the engine will be a small plastic compression fitting. The back side will be a metal pipe with a nut that threads into the fuel filter. Spary this with penetrating oil to eat into the rust. Take the front connection off first to release the pressure. Leave the mount connected to secure the filter and also put a wrench on the hex built into the back of the fuel filter. Then use another wrench to loosen up the nut on the metal fuel pipe that goes into the filter. You will want to be very careful here as the matal hard line between the fuel tank and the filter is somewhat delicate. I screwed this up on a car once and it was a real @&#$% to fix. I suggest flare nut wrenches, even if you have to go to the store to buy them just for this task. As I recall this is an english part not a metric one but maybe someone can confirm as I could be wrong.

I wear a plastic face shield when changing as there will likely be some residual pressure in the line and it can spray when you open it. Expect to make a mess with gasoline no matter how you do this. Latex sugical gloves work great for a lot of car tasks but the gasoline eats right through them.

If you use a light, make sure it is a fluorescent one and not an incandescent one as gas is flamable and incandescent lights are an ignition source both from the heat of the bulb and from the risk of bulb breakage.

Re: fuel filter whereabouts

There are better ways to relieve the pressure....either with the Schraeder valve in the M/C or by pulling the fuel pump fuse while the engine is running. I still get a pint or so of fuel on the ground but there is no pressure/spray.
