300CD vs 300d vs 240d
I am looking for a reliable driver with the least amount of headache. I have been looking at MB diesels. Can anyone comment on the reliability difference between a 300CD, 300d and 240d or comments in general, things to particulary look out for or better years etc. any comments are apreciated, thanks

All three are quite good...
First, all three models of the w123 family you list are excellent cars that are reliable and efficient. The 300 D/CD model year 1982 and later will be turbocharged (123 – 125 hp); the 300 CDs are somewhat rare (only 8007 turbo models made) and will command a higher price than the sedans. The non-turbo 300 D/CDs have 88 hp engines and provide adequate power in town but can be problematic on the highway.
The 240 D came with a 65 hp engine and after 1979 a 72 hp engine; like the pre-1982 300 D/CD the cars are quite good in town but are slow to accelerate. Once up to speed all engines are fairly responsive. 240 Ds can be found with manual transmissions, which is quite desirable. The OM616/617 diesel engines are strong, reliable, easy to work on, and never fail if taken care of. It is not unusual for these engines to reach 500,000 miles with out a rebuild or engine failure. At about 3500 pounds and with a 110 inch wheelbase these are not small cars; they are very stable on the open road and nimble in urban settings. Although closely related to the w114/w115 models they replace, the w123 has a modern design that matches cars 20 years younger yet exhibits classic styling. Many consider these cars among the best looking Mercedes designed. Rust can be a problem; look for a car from the South or West – road salt is cancer to these cars. Diesels are not for everyone, however – they all require a different driving style. Make sure you test-drive and have a mechanic check the car before you buy. Hopes this helps and good luck. |
