New noise from '92?

Hey All.

I have just recently got a new noise coming from under the hood on my 92 EX. It sounds like a intermittent popping noise, similar to popcorn going off, maybe 2-3 pops per second on average. This only occurs when stopped at a red light at idle, and does not occur if I am moving at all. The sound seems pretty benign, but I am curious as to what it is. Anybody have any ideas? I am going to look under the hood later while it is running to zero in on it.

Without hearing it, its hard to say what it is. First thing I'd check(while the engine is cool) is the exhaust heatshields, including the exhaust manifold heat shield. All you need to do is tap on the shields, if it rattles - thats your noise. I don't know the name for it but when your engine/metals get hot - a popping noise is heard.

Yep it is hard to describe a sound isn't it? I am more paranoid than usual since I am about to drive it 2500 miles for Christmas. Everything is running great, I have 128k miles and am shooting for 200k. Wish me luck!

Since your driving long distances, its better to be safe than sorry. Take your car to the Honda Dealer while its warm, a service advisor could listed to it for free and give you his/her opininion.

I'll bet it's a heatshield clicking or something along those lines - kinda like old radiators.
