Hi,
My 1997 Civic EX coupe's engine has sounded very loud (like a race car) the past month or so. The car seems slower and has gotten worse gas mileage. How do I get it back to sounding like normal? Thanks. |

Re: Loud Engine
Is there a hole in the exhaust?
When was the last time you did any maintenance? |

Jeepse, have somebody rev the engine while you look underneath the car and see if you can feel around for any gasses coming out (while the pipe's cold). If you think you feel something, put some soapy water over the suspected area and check for bubbles. If that's the case, go to a junkyard and buy a new exhaust for about $150 if you're okay with using a ratchet Check www.car-part.com and search for a stock exhaust in your area and it will give you a list of junkyards and prices. Hope this helps unlike dipshit's reply.

anyhow, check for holes in your exhaust pipes and exhaust manifold too. The factory exhaust manifold on my 4G civic had a good size crack in it and it was pretty loud.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and give good advice. After finals, I'm going to check about the exhaust problems you guys mentioned. Thanks again! |

Re: Loud Engine
for an even quicker fix find some one who welds, or rent one and find the spot where its leaking and spot weld it
worked for me |

Re: Loud Engine
is it loud under the hood? if yes, most likely its the exhaust manifold gasket or donut gasket(connects manifold to exhaust pipe) hold your hand near these areas and you can feel the airflow where the leak is. if its loud under the car, most likely you have a hole in the muffler.
