Question 3.4 Vs 5.0tpi Vs 5.0tbi

Im checkin out some older used camaro's (82-93 as im looking for a project car) I just wanted to know which engine is the best. The best as in cold winter start ups, dependability, performance, MPG and admittance to mods.

Re: 3.4 Vs 5.0tpi Vs 5.0tbi

easy 5.0 TPI, at least out of the options you listed. obviously the 5.7L TPI is the best choice for the camaros of those years. the 6 banger is just that, a 6 banger, nuff said. and the 5.0 is a boat ancher as far as V8s are concerned, just cuz of a horrible bore stroke ratio. but as long as you buy a car that has been taken car of rather than abused, all three are good choices for a dependable driver. that will respond well to mods. just being me i would rank them in order from best to worst. 5.7L TPI, 5.0L TPI, 5.0L TBI, six banger. but all should be plenty dependable. oh, and the IROC i just bought with the 5.7L TPI averaged 23 mpg on the 1100 mile trip from arkansas to virginia where i live. and that was with the 6 and 8 cylender plug wires crossed, and a bad O2 sensor. although i do have 2.77 gears in it and an overdrive auto. but it is a frame of reference. my RS has a TBI 305, and gets about the same on the highway, and closer to 16-17mpg around town. havent driven the IROC around town yet, but its problly pretty close. dont know about the sixbanger, but its probly higher than those, but will be a slug performance wise, at least to the big dogs that run the V8's

Well, i do know the 3.8 and 5.0 are pretty equaly, and the 3.8 may actually be better. Stock performance wise. 170vs200 est.

buddy of mine has a grand prix with the 3.8 and I have a 91 RS with 305 tbi, and he blew me away in the 1/4 mile, so yea, the 3.8 is better, when it's a stock comparison

Re: 3.4 Vs 5.0tpi Vs 5.0tbi

yeah thats what i was going to say. the third gens did not have the 3.8 L V6, it was the 2.8 and 3.1, and did not have 200hp. im not sure what the rating is exactly, but i know it runs an 8.9:1 compression to the 9.3:1 of the V8s, and is naturally smaller, so i very much doubt it is faster than even the 305. but the 6ers did come with lower rear gearing than the 8s, but i dont think it would make tha much of a diff in the big picture. but yeah, the third gen V6 makes no where near 200hp stock, maybe like 120 or 130. but again, i dont really know, just basing it off experience.

Re: 3.4 Vs 5.0tpi Vs 5.0tbi

the 305 is a 5.0L, and makes 170hp in the TBI setup, and 190hp in the TPI setup, the 350 is the 5.7L and made 230hp, those are all 1989 numbers, i dont know the other years, but i know the 350 TPI went to 245hp for the 1990 to 1992 years.

Re: 3.4 Vs 5.0tpi Vs 5.0tbi

lol, yeah yeah yeah ssboy, we all know the 305 is a boat anchor, and has a horrrrrible power to size ratio, the 80's were not a kind decade to domestic performance.
