Talking Woman trampled at Wal Mart

My sister told me about this so I searched through the LA Times and found the story on the last page. It's pretty damn funny if you ask me.

Woman Trampled in Shoppers' Sale Frenzy
From Associated Press

ORANGE CITY, Fla. — A mob of shoppers rushing for a sale on DVD players trampled the first woman in line and knocked her unconscious as they scrambled for the shelves at a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Patricia VanLester, who remained hospitalized Saturday, had her eye on a $29 DVD player, but when the siren blared at 6 a.m. Friday announcing the start to the post-Thanksgiving sale, the 41-year-old was knocked to the ground by the frenzy of shoppers behind her.

"She got pushed down, and they walked over her like a herd of elephants," said VanLester's sister, Linda Ellzey. "I told them, 'Stop stepping on my sister! She's on the ground!' "

Ellzey said some shoppers tried to help VanLester, and one employee helped Ellzey reach her sister, but most people just continued their rush.

Paramedics found VanLester unconscious on top of a DVD player, surrounded by shoppers seemingly oblivious to her, said Mark O'Keefe, a spokesman for EVAC Ambulance.

She was flown to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where doctors said she would probably remain hospitalized through the weekend, Ellzey said.

Ellzey said Wal-Mart officials called to ask about her sister, and the store apologized and offered to put a DVD player on hold for her.

Wal-Mart Stores spokeswoman Karen Burk said she had never heard of a such a melee during a sale.

Meanwhile, at its headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Saturday it hit a single-day company sales record during the traditional day-after-Thanksgiving shopping sprees, taking in $1.52 billion nationally.

Last year, Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, reported sales of $1.43 billion for the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Yea I heard about that on the news. It just made me realize that you don't fuck with women who are going shopping. I also saw two ladies pushing some lady to the back of the line b/c she was trying to cut. I don't blame the women for pushing her back though, i was hopping i would see a fist fly or something.

Actually, I dont find it funny in the least; I find it really pathetic that consumers are so blinded by their own greed that they can't even understand the value of a human being over their own personal want. The store didnt even rope off an area around her so she could get proper treatment, nor did they take any action to close the store (though should they have there probably would have been more problems) and the only thing they offered her was to hold the DVD player she came to get. Yup, that's pretty funny alright.

I completely agree I read about this over the weekend too and it makes me sick that people are so pathetic, that they would trample a woman for a DVD player even though the woman's sister was yelling for them to stop, that store should have been closed after it happened and every customer that participated in that rush arrested and prosecuted, what a herd mentality that is something sheep or cows would do I thought that we as a civilization would have gotten past trampling our own kind for a good deal, I hope that woman sues Walmart and wins, i'll NEVER shop at Walmart again all they're going to do is hold a player for her that is pathetic maybe when she is able to walk agan she can go and get it.

Its funny in a sad way to hear how people are so enamored with getting a great deal on one thing or another that they'd treat the people around them with such disdain.

I laughed when I first saw the title. Then I read serious people's post. Then I read about the fraud. Am I free to laugh now??! Is a $30 DVD player worth that much effort?!

Maybe,if you could win a big fat lawsuit or out-of-court settlement in the process.
