What keeps AXOD tranny from going into Overdrive?
What would keep a seemingly good (no burnt fluid, no slippage or hard shifts) AXOD transmission from going into overdrive?
Is there a pressure sensor or speed sensor or loose wire(s) that I should look for? Thanks! |

What year is your car? The original AXOD has a cable between the throttle linkage and the top of the transmission. It's called a TV cable, of all things.
The later transaxles were AXOD-E, where the -E means Electronic. Ford removed the TV cable in favor of a wire harness.

It's a 92.
There is a cable that goes from the shifter to the top of the shift position sensor switch. I did replace this switch but nothing changed. I didn't play with the alignment of this cable though. One thing that my local mechanic did for me was to put his computer on the car and check the readings while the gear shifter was moved through the various positions. For some reason, when the shifter was in the overdrive position, the computer thought that the it was in nuetral. The computer correctly indicated all the other shift positions. We played a lot with the position of the shifter and could not get it to read otherwise. Also, when driving, playing with the position of the shifter will not help it to go into overdrive either. This is the reason why I replaced the position sensor switch but afterwards, the mechanic's computer still read nuetral for the overdrive position and we concluded that maybe his non-ford computer was not interpreting the code correctly (or there was a downstream problem in one of the wires in the harness?). |
