Re: Turbo Detonation
TUNING is the soloution to everything. it is when the fuel and air in the engine ignites before it is supposed to. VERY BAD.

Re: Turbo Detonation
hen tuning cars the proper timing for the fuel and air and the detonation is critical. thats why alot of people spend lots of $ into tuning their cars.

detonation is when the air fuel mixture ignites before the spark, this is often cause by hot spots on the pistons and too much cylinder pressure, this can also cause misfires, the easiest way to prevent this is to retard the ignition a few degrees, this will solve most problems.

You use a timing gun/light and use a step colder spark plugs. Also make sure your ignition/fuel system is healthy.

Re: Turbo Detonation
You can use a timing gun or if you are planning on buying an ignition system buy an MSD digital ignition and you can retard or advance by the turn of a knob

Re: Re: Turbo Detonation
what detonation is has been covered but to prevent it there are a number of ways.
1.lower compression-when boosting if the compression is too high combined with the boost will produce detonation 2.run rich-running slightly rich will prevent detonation to an extent 3.provide enough fuel-even high compression motors can be boosted to hell but they need enough fuel and ignition to compensate. tuning, tuning, tuning! 4.retarding ignition-although this works, it cuts your power considerably. not the best way to do it.

Re: Turbo Detonation
we run 16 deg btdc on our ls with 9.5 comp, 15psi, safc 310 cc injectors, to4-e, and no detonation, it is all in the tuning, when you retard the timing you loose power, if the fuel settings are correct you will not have to worry about the timing untill you cross over the 300hp mark, we are making just over 300 atw with that set up, that is our street car.

Re: Turbo Detonation
Mattbrye , a very important factor in detonation that is sometimes overlooked, is the fuel quality.
Higher octane rating = less possiblity of detonatation. Lower octane rating = more possiblity of detonation. Turbo vehicles tend to be picky on octane. |
