Question 2003 cavalier oil filter

just got the car and the first oil filter change is due. I have A/C and the heat shield seams to cover the plastic oil filter cover. Do you need to remove the heat shield to get at the cover ? It looks like oil will go everwhere when i do get it off. Does the filter come out with the cover as well ? There is also a exhaust sensor just below the filter that looks like its in the way.Any tips on the replacement of this filter?
