CV axle removal: Can't seperate upper ball joint.

I need to replace a torn CV boot, but I can't get the upper ball joint seperated. Is there another way? I have two pickle forks and one seems to be too small and the other too big. I really hate split boots, so if I can get this thing apart, that would be preferable.
