Unhappy 1997 Grand Prix GT runs hot above 210

My '97 with the standard 3.8 runs hot above 210. I've changed the following.
1. Water pimp
2. Thermostat
3. Had the radiator pulled apart, rodded out, and tanked.
4. Also had the entire system flushed

The fans do come on around 180.

I was wondering if anyone had any idea what else I could check or change. HELP?????

Well, I have an 93 SE and this what it happened to me.

The car ran really hot and I did exactly the same you did.
My mechaning found out that the low coolant sensor is also
a temp sensor for the ECU. IT was giving incorrect readings
and the fans started around 210.
In your case you determined that the fans do start at around 180
so the only left to do is replace the fans motors. Even tought they
start that does not mean that they will pull the required CFM's thru
the radiator to keep your car cool. These are not expensive, with around $100.00 you can get both and they are easy to install.

My fans now only seem to come on around 210 or above, I just achaged the temp sending unit. What's the ECU. I was going to see about getting a low coolant level sensor and try that as well. The other thing was trying a 180 thermostat.

Ok, sorry about the ECU, ECU is the engine control unit (a.k.a. PCM).
In my 90 LE the low level coollant sensor also works as the
ECU temperature sensor. In my case it worked half way, it was supposed to start the fan motors at 180 degrees but started at 210 to 215 degreess. The scanner would read 185 degrees when the fan started but the heat gun read 210. My mechanic replaced the low coolant sensor and that was the trick.
Try that and let me know.

The PCM will command Low Speed Cooling Fans operation under any of the following conditions:

When A/C is requested and Ambient temp is greater then 122F

When engine coolant temp exceeds 223F

When A/C refrigerent pressure is greater than 190 psi

When the ignition is off and the engine coolant temp is greater then 284F
------------------------------------------------------

When is your car running "hot"?? What's the outside temp???

The stock Tstat opens at 195, so for your car to be at 210 is not unreasonable.

Put a 180 tstat in and see what happens. I live in Texas and run a 160.

----------------------

Kilroy,

Its called a PCM
Straight from GM manuals ------ PCM = Powertrain Control Module

It does not really matters how I call it. What is important that you know what I mean and looks like yor know so that been said. What I am talking about here is what happened to my 90 SE Grand Prix.
The outside temp does not reach 95 degrees and the computer started the fans when the car was at 210 degrees. The scanner would tell that the computer tought the car was at 185 degrees but the heat gun read 210. The mechanic replaced the Low Level Coolant sensor and that was the problem. That was for my 90 SE GrandPRix. Everything was stock on it so that is what happened to my car.

All in coincidence....i just got over an antifreeze coming outta the seal on my water pump, the front cover to be exact. I had it flushed and all that good stuff. Before i had it done, i wans't running hot neccisarily, just at points when i was waiting for someone, like sitting idle in a driveway...i'd run high, like 210-230, but the minute i'd start driving...it'd stop. Well after i found the ani freeze leak and had all that replaced, w/ new gaskets and such....i'd run an even like 160ish....idk if that helps at all...but that's y mine was running hot, or at least close to it i guess.
