Anyone heard of this or tried it?

I heard some guy saying that he had filled his stock motor mounts with silicone or something to make them feel stiffer, without having to upgrade the inserts. Has anyone ever heard of this, or had success with it, or is it just another stupid "I came up with this cool thing and only paid $3.35 for a tube of silicone..." type of thing? Just curious...

I never heard of that, and it sounds like a mess.

I can't see that doing anything, seeing that silicone dosen't really get that hard. Maybe it helps a tiny bit, but not much I'd say.

i have heard of it...from a few places.

it will help a little. but why not just get the energy suspension motor mount inserts? Theyre only like $30...and if you really wanted to go crazy, you could fill the mounts with silicone, then install the inserts.

I have the energy suspension inserts & my car vibrates like hell @ idle, too much for my taste. They do make a difference when it comes to traction, with out them my car wheel hops like hell. They are collecting dust right now.

you dont use silicone, you use polyeurethane glue. its like $3.00 for enough to do all of the mounts. it makes them very stiff and also is a fix for a worn rubber mount.

My friend uses muffler weld on his motor mounts in his saturn. It works pretty good for like a month and then it cracks and feels like normal, so he just puts more on. Looks like shit but actually works temporarily.

I actually did this on my front motor mount because it was ripped and my car would shake alot at idle, i took it out and packed it with silicone, been drivin it like this for 10,000 miles and its worked great, it doesnt shake and is pretty solid

Re: Anyone heard of this or tried it?

so where do you pick up polyurethane glue? My mounts are not in great shape, but I don't want to put in a full energy kit... I just want to fix them up and improve it a little...

fyi..

the energy suspension kit is only an "add on" piece. They are inserts that go on either side of your stock mount. And like i said...theyre only like $30 for the d series set.

Keep your rubber ones!

I swear, poly bushings don't make the ride as nice. I fuckin' hate mine.

I'm with SiZ, they suck for every day driving. Go with the inserts so if you don't like them, you can remove unlike the other methods talked about.

Re: Re: Re: Anyone heard of this or tried it?

I used the stuff that is used to put windshields in. You have to put it in in layers for maximum set. If you goop it all in at once then it will have bubbles and never fully cure.
I get tired of hearing about how the ride quality sucks when you do this or that. If you want a smooth ride then go buy a Cadilliac. I know that everything I do is going to make the car vibrate, squeak and rattle. Thats why I have subs. Turn it up it all goes away.
Also I have done this cheap mod and I am now looking for a set of ES mount bushings and a new set of motor mounts. Thats tells you how well it worked for me.

FYI,

the energy suspension mount kit for the EF civic comes only with the front and rear mount inserts. the sides are supposed to be left stock. I guess the front and rear and considered "torque mounts" and since they have the most force acting upon them, they are the ones that need stiffening up.

If anything, Fill and front and rear only.

I personally have ES inserts and noticed no difference whatsoever, but friends of mine with the front mount filled and the rest stock say the engine is rock solid.
