Cool b16 or b18 non vtec

hey people, i've been thinking about the low price engines w/ reasonable power gains and i think it's down to the b16a 1st gen, b18a1 from 92-93 or a b18b1 from a 3g teg. these are the engines i think i might be able to afford i know the specs on each and that i would need to go w/ a hydro trannie for the b18b1 or get a b16 trannie, i am looking for a trannie w/ lsd and someone correct me if i'm wrong but all b seriese engines can have aftermarked lsd onto them right.

b16a (first gen) 158hp@7600 rpm / 112lb-ft@7000 rpm

b18a1 (92-93) 140hp@6300 rpm / 121lb-ft@5200 rpm

b18b1 (3g ls/rs/gs)142hp@6300 rpm / 128lb-ft@6200 rpm

and what does the part selection look like for each, someone told me that all b seriese engines w/ work w/ most any of the performance parts, and if i got a non vtec engine i would not add vtec to it, mabey a couple of bolt ons, my goal is around 200hp, vtec is nice but price is an object. soooo pros and cons?

well i'm a fan of the b16a myself its a damned good motor. cons are wiring in vtec not as much tourqe as B18 yea i say get an LSD if you did b18 and home cooked turbo kit you can push 200whp no prob while with a b16 you can get that with cams gears vafc I/h/E (im an allmotor buff so i lean to that) also did i ever tell you i get creeped out by your ava and start to think thats what you look like. lol

go B16A. all this crap about the LS out torquing and beating the b16 is bullshit. My LS was screaming for all it was worth and just managed to muster a 15.5@88mph with I/H/E. Most BONE STOCK B16As will drop into the 14s in an EF.

if you want all motor go with the B16 but if you want a turbo go with a B18 or a mild turbo go with a B16 al depends on what you want

sorry if my ava creeps people out, but that's from a comic where the guy w/ the drill mutilates annoying people and i find that vaguely amusing. IS THE B18 weight a big problem if you don't have the power of vtec?

Well i did notice that with a B18A1, the handling characteristics of the car changed dramatically.. it felt very front heavy.

I don't see what you're trying to get at here.. It seems like you're talking about two different things.

Anyway, you know what I'll say.
B16 no matter what, they're basically the same friggin' price! (sometimes B18s are more)

technically i'm asking the pros and cons of each and one more thing, which one would have most daily driver durability after pushed to around 200hp, another thing, i know the b16's torque curve is not as strong. if i strapped a small turbo onto a b18b1 to bring it to 200whp, would it still be semi reliable.

and I/H/E no decrese in duribility right?

Re: b16 or b18 non vtec

A b16 with a small turbo (6psi) would still likley be faster. Its got more base HP, and a shorter geared tranny.

I/H/E should have basically no direct affect on the engines wear and tear.

cool cool cool, what about the touque. i like torque, but is it that noticable, or is vtec a better choice than better torque?

Re: b16 or b18 non vtec

There's no answer to that. Again, you're trying to compare two different things. Torque is just usable HP at low RPM. HP is torque.

A torquier motor will be easier to drive around day-to-day.. Because it makes more power in the lower rev range, so it will get you up to speed quicker for cruising around. (when driving normally, or hard but without redlining it)

But I'm asumming that most people that do swaps aren't looking for more push below 4,000rpm but instead would rather have a fast car when you want to be racing it. Thats where the B16 comes into play. Its got a very short geared transmission (Mine is a JDM S1, same ratios exactly as an ITR tranny but minus the LSD), and VTEC. The beauty of these two things combined is that when you're racing it the car stays in between the range of 6-8,000rpm where the motor is making ample power. 140+ range..

Re: b16 or b18 non vtec

They just need to improve their driving skills a bit. Not everyone can drive as well with the B16, it can be a little difficult to get used to.
